Water Of Love Lyrics
High and dry in the long hot day
Lost and lonely in every way
Got the flats all around me sky up above
I need a little water of love
I’ve been too long lonely and my heart feels pain
Crying out for some soothing rain
I believe I have taken enough
I need a little water of love
Water of love deep in the ground
No water here to be found
Some day baby when the river runs free
It’ll carry that water of love to me
There’s a bird up in a tree sitting up high
Waiting for me to die
If I don’t get some water soon
I’ll be dead and gone in the afternoon
Once I had a woman I could call my own
Once I had a woman now my woman is gone
Once there was a river now there’s a stone
You know it’s evil when you’re living alone
Lost and lonely in every way
Got the flats all around me sky up above
I need a little water of love
Crying out for some soothing rain
I believe I have taken enough
I need a little water of love
No water here to be found
Some day baby when the river runs free
It’ll carry that water of love to me
Waiting for me to die
If I don’t get some water soon
I’ll be dead and gone in the afternoon
Once I had a woman now my woman is gone
Once there was a river now there’s a stone
You know it’s evil when you’re living alone

A great song starting the first album of what was to become a classic band.
its simple, love is water, and he''s dieing of a lack of it.
Simplistic though they are, and relatively obvious in meaning, the lyrics convey the sadness and loneliness of being without love in a harsh world. I love the extended metaphor of drought to show the depth of the narrator's despair.
This is a great song from a great band... a little disappointed that this is only the fourth comment its got!
This an absolutely Gem of a song. The reference to despair, loneliness are almost palpable. I too am disappointed that this song has only 5 comments. This song is very underrated.
One of my favorite songs. Like mentioned above, an absolute gem, seemingly hidden in plain sigh. I didn't discover this song till many years after I first became a fan of the Dire Straits.
I highly recommend the live version that Mark performed in '96 on the Golden Heart tour in Vaison. This song just does a fantastic job at relaying that strange melancholy feeling of lonesome longing for company, the desire to fill a void that even time can't close up.
Amazing song! Can't believe there aren't more comments. In my opinion, one of Dire Straits' top 5. The mechanics of the song are amazing: the grueling monotony of the drums, and the emotion in the guitar depict the exact feeling of a "love drought". Awesome! Dire Straits is the best!
I think that the "speakers" woman has died.. At the end he says: "Once I had a woman I could call my own Once I had a woman now my woman is gone Once there was a river now there's a stone".
The stone could be the tombstone which is the only thing replacing the river of love..
Water of love deep in the ground - could be a dead lover?
