all the photographs are peeling
and colors turn to gray, he's stayin'
in his room with memories for days, he faced
an undertow of futures laid to waste, embraced
by the loss of one he could not replace
and there's no reason that she'd pass
and there is no god with the plan, it's sad
and his holiness is proof, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad
the door swings through a passing fable
a fate we may delay, we say
holding on, to live within our embrace
eleven nights, he laid in bed
hoping that dreams would bring her back, it's sad
and his holiness is proof, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad
holding his last breath, believing
he'll make his way
but she's not forgotten
he's haunted
he's searching for escape
if just one wish could bring her back, it's sent
and his holiness is proof, it's sad
he will always love you, it's sad
and colors turn to gray, he's stayin'
in his room with memories for days, he faced
an undertow of futures laid to waste, embraced
by the loss of one he could not replace
and there's no reason that she'd pass

first of all this is a beautiful song, and its my fav. one by them..
the meaning i think is that its about this guy who lost the love of his life because she died. and now hes all messed up and he dosn't want to leave his house or do anything and hes all depressed. And hes haunted becuase he doesent want to love anyone else besides her. thats just my 2 cents
@Gia Carangi That sounds a bit like Layne Staley, after his girlfriend Demri Lara Parott's in 1996 a lot of people close said he never got over it, he didnt have another girlfriend again and his last public appearance was in 1998, from 1998 to his death in 2002 he stayed at his home, alone most of the time not seeing friends or family often.

Isn't it "loneliness"? I think that makes more sense than "holiness." Hard to tell from listening, either or. The eleven nights line is my favorite.
"Holiness", makes perfect sense. The subject has become increasing holy since the passing of his lover. I imagine him laying in bed, crying, saying "please god, please bring her back". It's sad and his holiness is proof.

the opening is absolutely awesome... and this song is pure beauty... but i think while it is about the passing of one he loves it could just as easily be interpreted as she has left him... and i think this is one of my favorite songs ever. i don't know why it isn't popular.
You pretty much explained it what it means. But yeah what an amazing and beautiful song
It's holiness...to be holy means to be dedicated...so he's basically saying his dedication is proof.
It isn't holiness according to the pearl jam site. There the line is; And his loneliness is proof.

Also I've seen some people interpret the verse: "and his loneliness, it's cruel" Some of the later parts could quite easily be this. I'm not sure whether it's about someone who's died or someone who's left him. Either way, one of my fav PJ songs.
This song is not about Jeff Ament's wife, Jeff Ament did not have a wife at the time of the binaural recording sessions. And I do not think he has one right now. Furthermore, he didn't write the song, Eddie Vedder did.
This is one incredible track from one of the greatest bands on the face of the earth. I dont have any clue why it didnt make the record. I think it is pretty self explanatory of a song if you listen to it.
It is a binaural B-side can be found on the Lost dogs CD and the linear notes state that it is the other side to Jeff's song "the other side".
'Other Side' as mentioned above is about the relationship between Jeff's parents, mainly focusing on his dad I think. So this is about his mom I guess? And Jeff Ament was never married. Ed was married and divorced, Matt Cameron is currently married.
this was written around the time (2000) that ed divorced the woman he'd been married to&dated since the mid-80's (Beth).so maybe it could be about him either...or the idea bout jeffs mom cud b true eithr...
Come on people.......
Eddie Vedder did not divorce with beth until after the Binaural album was released......
And EDDIE WROTE the song.... he wrote it to because he liked Jeff Ament's song Other Side and wanted to do his own piece from the perspective of the one who was left behind....... the one who survived...... it is a story, a B-side opera.......
Like I wrote before: "This is the other side to Jeff's song "the other side"."
