Mother Machine Gun Lyrics

(Can we make progress?
Have we learned our lesson?
How can we take the test
without the questions?
The mind will play Pontius,
the soul's the defendant.
The heart is the consciense.
You're the next contestant.)

Somehow the greatest point
comes without reason.
Somehow my made up mind
acts without thinking right.

(Interrogate the truth
until you hear what you like)

Now I can't understand
what keeps me going.
There is no master plan.
Nothing to go on, to grow on,
believe in.
Everything leaves me cold.
Too many promises.
Not enough evidence of my soul.

(Interrogate the truth
until you hear what you like)

Nothing to go on, to grow on.
Not enough evidence
[somehow know where do I begin]
of my soul.

Now I can't understand
what keeps me going.
There is no master plan.
Nothing to go on, to grow on,
believe in.
Everything leaves me cold.
Too many promises.
Not enough evidence of my soul, now.

(Interrogate the truth
until you hear what you like)

Nothing to go on, to grow on.
Not enough evidence of my soul.
Somehow know where do I begin.

(Interrogate the truth
until you hear what you like)

Nothing to go on, to grow on.
Not enough evidence of my soul.
Somehow know where do I begin.

(It's time to take a stand
and defend your innocence.
You can slip through the system
exploiting it's arrogance.
Time to take a stand
and defend your innocence.
You can slip through the system
exploiting it's arrogance.)

Not enough evidence of my soul.
Not enough evidence.

(Interrogate the truth
until you hear what you like)

Of my soul.
Somehow know where do I begin.

(Interrogate the truth
until you hear what you like)

Nothing to go on, to grow on.
Not enough evidence of my soul.

Of my soul.

Of my soul...

I think there may be two separate themes in the song: unfair trial/prosecution and eternalness.

The 1st verse mentions Pontious or more specifically Pontius Pilate, the judge of the trial of Jesus Christ and the one who ordered his crucifixion. I'm not sure exactly what this verse is about but the line: "How can we take the test Without the questions" suggests that not enough questions have been asked about a prosecution.

Throughout the song, verses and lines suggest an unfair trial due to overlooked evidence.

I wonder if the theme of trial and judgment is referring to the ability of Religious people to overlook the evidence against Religion.

Not sure what the 2nd verse is about "Some how the greatest Point comes without reason".

I think the 3rd verse (There is no master plan) is about the writer having to come to grips with the realization may be nothing after we die. I think there is a lot to this verse:

  • "There is no master plan" this refers to God's master plan mentioned in the bible.
  • "Too many promises/Not enough evidence of my soul" the Christian promises of an afterlife conflict with Christianity being unable to provide evidence of a supernatural existence.
  • "Now I can't understand, What keeps me going" this is a common atheist dilemma. Many people have a desire to work towards some greater good or at least want to know that they still exist in some way when they die. Without the existence of an afterlife, there is nothing important to work towards nor even any logical point to life at all.
My Interpretation

As an athiest this songs really calls to me, theres alot in this that describes the feelings, questions, and mindset of trying to find meaning in life "not enough evidence of my soul" i think means just that. There isnt evidence that you have a soul, that you are more than your living mind and body. There just isnt evidence of that. "Interrogate the truth until you hear what you like" I think refers to how people take facts and try to find proof of religion or spirituality while rejecting facts that show its not real. "Everything leaves me cold" Reminds me of the cold empty feeling of knowing how meaningless everything is. Anyone else get this from the song?

My Interpretation

It seems that they're wondering if everything that happens to them is fate. Or if everything just happens without reason. Are our lives planned out by some higher power or do we have control?

"Now I can't understand what keeps me going. There is no master plan, nothing to go on, to grow on. Somehow know where do I begin?"

I think its more about unplanned inspiration or actions without reason, as if it was instinctual, and now they wonder if this is how our fate was supposed to be, just working on instinct.

It's supposed to say: "The heart's the defendant the soul is the conscience"

Jeeeeez

it seems to be about fate and how people wonder and want the explanation for what happens to them but will never get it

wow not that many comments???? this is one of their best songs!!!!! "somehow the greatest point comes without reason, somehow my made up mind, acts without thinking right." what a profound line. somebody should find out some band history to see if any members have been convicted of a crime because thats a huge theme with them.

I think this song is about a court case. "Nothing to go on, to grow on, not enough evidence of my soul", "interrogate the truth until you hear what you like". It even sounds a bit anti-authority.

I think this song is about how useless torture and manipulation are. He continually makes references to a court case and interrogation. He says "not enough evidence" so the its the person's job to get the information by any means. This song i think is also about how flawed the government is and how they just manipulate facts and they have no soul. To me this song is pointing out the flaws in our court systems, something everyone believes is regulated and untainted.
