40 Ft. Lyrics
As I glance once upon the foam
40 feet beneath my feet
The coldest calm falls
Through the molten veins
Cooling all the blood to slush
That congeals around the brain
La la la
40 feet remain
Salt scales upon my drying arms
Burn my back beneath the sun
But I am cold beneath the burning rays
Looking down, looking down
Down, down again
La la la
40 feet remain
40 feet beneath my feet
The coldest calm falls
Through the molten veins
Cooling all the blood to slush
That congeals around the brain
Burn my back beneath the sun
But I am cold beneath the burning rays
Looking down, looking down
Down, down again

Just a random thing that probably has little to do with this song - in Nova Scotia, there is a 'money pit' where many believe there is buried treasure. They keep trying to excavate it to no avail. However, they found a stone that says, "forty feet below, two million pounds lay buried." Perhaps it's about being so close to something and yet so far away, and knowing that no matter how much you desire it, you'll never be able to get it.
Ah this is such an interesting inneudo! Tx for sharing!

This song is great... but it confuses me... oh lalalalalalalaalala
The greatest thing about FF is that they combine both real life situation reference and an historical//myth reference in most of their songs, read the words again, it rings something not?
its weird... it starts out explaining what seems like a really bad/scary situation, but then he starts singing la la la, as if it's no big deal.....i love it.
I love the riff. It's real jazzy and bouncy.
Whoa...almost makes suicide seem tragically beautiful.
Great song.
The first few times I heard this song, I assumed it was about somebody doing some kind of manual work outside (like building a road, or digging a pit) where he has 40 feet left to go. Now I've looked at the lyrics, I agree it does seem more like he's about to throw himself into the sea, but I still prefer my first explanation! The rhythm seems so much better fitted if he's working, rather than preparing to jump.
It reminds me of the Robert Frost poem that ends: 'But I have promises to keep And miles to go before I sleep And miles to go before I sleep"
[and in the same way, lots of people assume that poem is about suicide, btu I prefer it just as somebody who is tired but has to keep moving]
@bokonon I really like your way of interpretting the song & the poem! You may have no idea what your causal comment left 10 years ago means to me haha, but personally it's really intriguing and enlightening! I hope you see this and hope you all the best!

Great song by a great band.
A bit confusing on the lyrics though, I'll bite into the suicide path though.
Tragically wonderful.
i had always thought it was just a really great song..... then i read the first post... and didnt realize till then that it could be about suicide..... altho the "i have alot of work to do ahead of me" perspective is a more optimistic one.... both seem to fit... to each his own.... altho... the lalalas seem to make the hard work ahead more likely.... b-e-a-utiful song!!
