The Perfect Fit Lyrics
Could make a dress
A robe fit for a prince
I could clothe a continent
But I can't sew a stitch
I can paint my face
And stand very, very still
It's not very practical
But it still pays the bills
I can't change my name
But I could be your type
I can dance and win at games
Like backgammon and life
I used to be the smart one
Sharp as a tack
Funny how that skipping years ahead
Has held me back
I used to be the bright one
Top in my class
Funny what they give you when you
Just learn how to ask
I can write a song
But I can't sing in key
I can play piano
But I never learned to read
I can't trap a mouse
But I can pet a cat
No I'm really serious
I'm really very good at that
I can't fix a car
But I can fix a flat
I could fix a lot of things
But I'd rather not get into that
I used to be the bright one
Smart as a whip
Funny how you slip so far when
Teachers don't keep track of it
I used to be the tight one
The perfect fit
Funny how those compliments can
Make you feel so full of it
I can shuffle, cut and deal
But I can't draw a hand
I can't draw a lot of things
I hope you understand
I'm not exceptionally shy
But I've never had a man
That I could look straight in the eye
And tell my secret plans
I can take a vow
And I can wear a ring
And I can make you promises but
They won't mean a thing
Can't you do it for me?
I'll pay you well
Fuck, I'll pay you anything
If you could end this
Can't you just fix it for me?
It's gone berserk
Fuck, I'll give you anything
If you can make the damn thing work
Can't you just fix it for me?
I'll pay you well
Fuck, I'll pay you anything
If you can end this
Hello, I love you
Will you tell me your name?
Hello, I'm good for nothing
Will you love me just the same?

I identify totally with this song. When you're the "smart one" in school, doing everything so effortlessly, the teachers stop watching or caring what you're doing, and you start slacking off because you can get away with it.
(I didn't learn to read music until I'd been playing the violin for three years because I could just hear a song once and then play it by ear.)
When everything in school is easy and you never have to work hard to do well, you don't end up developing as much of a work ethic and have to struggle with that for the rest of your life. So you end up with all this potential that you never do anything with. It's extremely frustrating and feels like you've screwed up your life just by being who and what you are.
i think it's a reference on how she's good but not good enough, pointing out her good qualities and her tact and skill but still downplaying it by singing it in a tone of indifference, and following it up with a statement that lessens the value of her talent
In my opinion the true meaning of the song comes out in the last verses.. on how she could never 'look a man in the eye and tell my secret plans' and 'i can take a vow and i can wear a ring and i can make you promises but they won't mean a thing'...to me this says that all her good qualites are downplayed through out the song because her failure is in love
Leading to the last lines that she begs for somebody to fix her, because despite how much some of us would love to have her skills to her the one skill she would like to have makes the rest of her talents seem much like she addressed them in this song unimportant
The last two lines just soudn like desperation, telling you her flaws in love but still begging for a chance for someone to love her... somebody to try to fix her... come on she'll even pay you
I like the Doors reference in this song "Hello, I love you, won't you tell me your name?"
Amazing song.
I think this song is about how good she was in general at the beginning. Good in school, the virgin, could always find something she was good at. But then it all turns around when she begins sleeping around, refering to the
"I used to be the tight one the perfect fit funny how those compliments can make you feel so full of it"
line. Then near the end, she realizes because of this, she can no longer share her secrets with a man because all she's ever had them for was sexual purposes. She either feels she can't change this side of her, which is refering to the
"i'm not exceptionally shy but i've never had a man that i could look straight in the eye and tell my secret plans
i can take a vow and i can wear a ring and i can make you promises but they won't mean a thing" line.
She wants to change though, and is looking for a man to fix her, and would give anything to him. Refering to the
"can't you just fix it for me, it's gone berserk... fuck i'll give you anything if you can make the damn thing work"line.
I believe by "the damn thing" she's refering to her heart. She wants someone to teach her how to love instead of just have sex with her.
i can't change my name but i could be your type i can dance and win at games like backgammon and life

i believe this is one of thier deeper songs..even though allof them are...i really love this song..but i think it pertains to a specific group of people that i can relate to...she was the best at everything...and if she wasn't able to do soemthing...she could sitll reach the same conclusion by other means..that was her life..butn when u get older and experience mor ethings...things can change a lot..she is feeling semi trapped i think...she's so used to doing everything herself..and ebing the one who could fit perfectly in any role...and it gets tiresome..now she just wishes someone else could do it for her...and remove that burden..and let her still be the ebst..have soemoneelse carry her for once...but thats just what i think..
my favortie line is "i used to be the bright one top in my class funny what they give you when you just learn how to ask " lol ...its very true..
Shit. Aint that the truth. There's something about this song that eats at those secrets in your soul.

'Tis a great song. I always thought it was about how when she was younger, she thought she could do anything that she wanted too, but things turned out differently for her.
And I love the reference to her days as the 8-Foot Bride. Same goes for Glass Slipper. <3
"i used to be the tight one the perfect fit"
i love the sound of her voice during these lines
I love this song. I can relate to it in a lot of ways, its really kind of a personal song for me; it carries a lot of emotion, I think.
"i used to be the tight one the perfect fit funny how those compliments can make you feel so full of it"
....i also love her voice here, and i love this line. it makes me think of sex.. tight. i dont know why.
