I Was A Stranger Lyrics
I was a stranger
When I came to town
Just yesterday
I was a stranger
They don't come much stranger
So why
Why did you believe
All every word I said
Why did you believe
Believe a stranger
A stranger
And why do you women in this town
Let me look at you so bold
When you should have seen what I was
In the last town
In the last town
You should have seen what I was
If I was a stranger
I was worse than a stranger
I was well-known
When I came to town
Just yesterday
I was a stranger
They don't come much stranger
Why did you believe
All every word I said
Why did you believe
Believe a stranger
A stranger
Let me look at you so bold
When you should have seen what I was
In the last town
In the last town
You should have seen what I was
If I was a stranger
I was worse than a stranger
I was well-known

maybe self doubt. the persona doesn't think he'd be accepted and doesn't like the notion of being known. He also wonders why they all let him look at them "so bold"which i think suggests he looks at the as equals, and they don't care. Social acceptance.
It's a song about being a celebrity (you don't find that out until the end of the song) and really being a stranger.
Just because you see someone on tv or in the movies, you don't really KNOW them.
Just because someone is famous, doesn't mean they're not lying to you.
Just because someone is famous, doesn't mean they aren't trying to take advantage of you.
