She's Only Happy In The Sun Lyrics
I know you may not want to see me
On your way down from the clouds
Would you hear me if I told you
That my heart is with you now
She's only happy in the sun
She's only happy in the sun
Did you find what you were after?
The pain and the laughter brought you to your knees
But if the sun sets you free, sets you free
You'll be free indeed, Indeed
She's only happy in the sun
She's only happy in the sun
Every time I hear you laughing, I hear you laughing
It makes me cry
Like the story of life, of your life
Is hello, goodbye
Shes only happy in the sun
Shes only happy in the sun
On your way down from the clouds
Would you hear me if I told you
That my heart is with you now
She's only happy in the sun
The pain and the laughter brought you to your knees
But if the sun sets you free, sets you free
You'll be free indeed, Indeed
She's only happy in the sun
It makes me cry
Like the story of life, of your life
Is hello, goodbye
Shes only happy in the sun

The meaning of this song is much more obvious when you realize the references that ben is making to the Bible. "If the sun sets you free then you'll be free indeed", is actually a reference to john 8:36, when Jesus says, "if the SON sets you free, then you will be free indeed" -the Son being Jesus Christ, rather than sun. So, basically, ben is singing about a dead chick.
Come on guys, i reckon its about drugs and addiction. This is my interpretation and it makes sense to me-
I know you may not want to see me On your way down from the clouds = this is coming down of a high, when someone can be irritated etc
Would you hear me if I told you That my heart is with you now = this could be that she passed away from drugs, or it could be that he is trying to help her brake the addiction.
She's only happy in the sun = the sun is up in the sky, which is "high" hence continuing the analogy from the first line
Did you find what you were after? The pain and the laughter brought you to your knees = people use drugs for an escape and possible "soul searching", here ben says that it doesnt work, it will only ruin your life aka bring you to your knees.
But if the sun sets you free, sets you free You'll be free indeed, Indeed = this is ironic because ben is saying that if it makes you feel good getting high than do it, even though up until now its been negative towards drugs
Every time I hear you laughing, I hear you laughing It makes me cry = this is back to negatory because laughing meaning high of pot, and this makes ben sad, as he wants her to brake the addiction
Like the story of life, of your life Is hello, goodbye = this is hard to understand, but i think it means how an addict may move from town to town trying to run away from the addiction and the bad relationships that come with it.
This is what i think and it makes perfect sense to me :) enjoy
@knighty I agree with your interpretation of this song. "Coming down from the clouds" a reference to the awful feeling of coming down....when you have to come down off the drugs. And "when I hear you laughing it makes me cry" which is knowing the person is high. And the "your life is hello, goodbye" which, to me anyway, is the life cut short by overdose. One thing is for sure, addiction is way more than liking the feeling of being high, it´s a relationship inside you to something that no one, not even you, understands....

Another song with a deeply sad backstory is "Badfish" by Sublime. Start with the meaning of the slang "Badfish" in drug culture. Yikes.
the part where he sings "but if the sun sets you free, sets you free" is lovely.
the story of my life--
ben harper is so underrated...i mean his songwriting is flawless...and this song is just one testament to that...wow
This song is just amazing. I'm glad Ben Harper is underrated in a way. He's like my little secret that no one else really understands!!
AGREED!
AGREED!
also agreed! but i've gotta say, i've really loved turning a few of my friends onto this guy - just to see the look of "HOW HAVN'T I HEARD THIS GUY BEFORE?!" on their faces is priceless!!

Ben Harper is greatly underrated! and its so beyond me! but it is kind of cool how barely anyone seems to notice, it gives the listener a sense of achievement hahahaha. This song is great though...it reminds me of more than one girl i know. I think this song is about a girl who Ben loves, but she is only happy when things are vibrant and her world is sunny...if that makes sense.
This song just kills me. Absolutely kills me... I could listen to it over and over... the line "did you find what you were after, the pain and the laughter brought you to your knees" is just so incredible. It's so weird how this song is so vibrantly happy and so incredibly sad at the same time... has anyone else thought this?
i dont know if this is right..but it seems like this girl has left him bc when he says "did you find what you were after"..like something better than him..and then he says "you may not want to see me, on your way down" like the end of the relationship that she left him for...and he realizes shes only happy when everything is in the "sun" and things about absolutely perfect, but he cant really give her that..so he cant be with her...and thats why whenever he hears her laughing it makes him cry b.c hes sad hes not the one to make her laugh.
i heard this song at the mall, and i thought this song is so cool
