Whose Chariot? Lyrics

a patterned sunrise swept along away the sunrise
and over these underpasses a towering mountain does rise
but don't cross the river, not over there
there'' be a mystery revealed and i bet you dare
and if i am to seek this place y'all can see
whose chariot to follow so i can be free

at night the stars cry
i gaze upon a lake of backyard
and under these overpasses a towering mountain does lie
but don't cross the river, not over there
there'll be a mystery revealed that we're meant to share
so if i am to seek this place y'all can see
whose chariot to follow so i can be free

oh no, here we are again
oh no, here we are again
my mamma told me don't go cross that river
because you might not make it back
the beast gonna eat your heart
she said, don't go out there
stay upon your track
this money has torn my family apart and i cannot buy it back
so of course i built my boat, and was half upon my way
and when i got to the other side the water came rushing down
washed me away

whose chariot, whose chariot, whose chariot, chariot
whose chariot, whose chariot, chariot
chariot, whose chariot, chariot
chariot
freedom, freedom, whose chariot
freedom, freedom, whose chariot
freedom, freedom, whose chariot
whose chariot take me home
take me home

oh no, said i'm out that door again
i left my house, my money, and my dearest friend
i'm not going back, jack, across the river
got a little bit of business that i'm doing today
you didn't feel me, you can't really see no good
i made my life out a stack of wood
i've been moving cross the river today
but whose chariot take me home

whose chariot
take me home
hallelujah
coming home
who chariot gotta, will you take me
who chariot will you, will you take me
who chariot will you, will you take me
who chariot would you pick me up and take me
who chariot gotta, will you take me
who chariot just pick me up and take me
who chariot come and get me
whose chariot take me home
take me home

Just... wow.

The 34th and 8th version of this speeds it up a little, bringing with it a frenetic happiness and passion. For the life of me, I can't help but have a huge goofy grin on my face every single time I listen to this.

this song is actually about making the character in the song making a decision. the decision is between taking his life to bigger and better things and getting the money, but at the same time knowing that it might eventually corrupt and ruin him. the other decision is to just to live the way he's been living and enjoy his life the way it is, knowing that he will be happy with how his life as turned out. great song

to me this song is about somebody who has a life that society thinks we should have. (big house, nice car, good paying job big family) however it doesnt make him happy. he wants to live a carefree life somewhere closer to nature. its about the risk of giving up your old life in exchange for what makes you happy.

does anybody know what "chariot" directly refers to?

I'm not sure what it actually references in this song, but if you've ever heard the (once overplayed) song Chariot from Gavin Degraw, it seems curiously similar in it's outlook. Both songs came out in 2003 as well.

not really sure.. but if you listen to the 34th and 8th version he says "when four horsemen come my way, i'll be ready to go" In my opinion, he is referring to the drink (Jack Daniels Whiskey, Jim Beam bourbon, Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey, and Jose Cuervo) and maybe the "chariot" is referring to this in some way.

the chariot references is a biblical one. In this song, it refers to the 'chariot' that will take us to heaven or home. In the old testament, the prophet Elijah is taken to heaven on a 'chariot of fire'. It is also often linked to freedom. The famous slave song, 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' is further evidence of this relation to either heaven or freedom.
