Lifting Shadows off a Dream Lyrics
He seems alone and silent
thoughts remain without an answer
Afraid and uninvited
he slowly drifts away
Moved by desire and fear
Breaking delicate wings
Lifting shadows
off a Dream once broken
She can turn a drop of water
Into an ocean
As the rain is pouring down
Tears of sorrow wash his mind
Drifting with the current
This stream of life flows on
He seems alone and silent
waiting on his hands and knees
The chill of winter's darkness sits quietly
Moved by desire and fear
he takes a few steps away
Lifting shadows
off a Dream once broken
She can turn a drop of water
Into an ocean
And she listens openly
He pours his soul into the water
reflecting the mystery
She carries him away
and the winds die slowly
And she listens openly
And she listens openly
Lifting shadows
off a Dream once broken
She can turn a drop of water
Into an ocean
Lifting Shadows off a Dream

Quote by John Myung:
"... that song is more or less just reflecting the duality that exists between a man and a woman; the spiritual side of the relationship & how they both can compliment one another."
Gotta agree with aniland and constantmotion. Perfect interpretation of the song. Such a great one. Dunno why they don't let Myung write anymore... they say his lyrics are too weird but sometimes they're just brilliant imo.
agreed, he's written some really great stuff, they made a mistake there

Fear of loving another, then realizing how wonderful and easy it was to initiate. I get the feeling that this could have been about John Myung's first love, or a case where a person was given a chance to initiate love for the first time. John Myung himself report that this song is about the duality between man and woman, and how each one can compliment the other in a relationship.
Such a beautiful song.
I couldn't really connect with it before, but now after having experienced some things, I think it fits perfectly within my life and I can understand the lyrics so much better now. To me, it's about moving on from a failed relationship.
From the first verse, it's fairly clear that there's a man, and he's in pain and mourning about something, likely after just ending a relationship with someone he loved very much. I think the "dream" throughout the song is referring to his "desire and fear" to move forward and get on with his life, but shadows are covering his dream and stopping him from doing that.
But he finds a new girl, someone fresh, new and better, and she helps him by, hence the song title, "lifting shadows off a dream". It's also really well described with the line "she listens openly". I love that.
But, I think the best lyrics in this song are "she can turn a drop of water into an ocean". I love what that creates, that she's taking whatever sort of attraction he has to her (and so scared and fragile because he's still in pain) and turning it into something bigger and better by listening and giving him reassurance that she will be better.
It's such an uplifting song!
this song is great if youre in a mellow mood
To YtseJam: JM speaks?! :-P The lyrics of this song are really hard to figure out...
Masterpiece. Nothing else to say.
This song is indeed to listen to when in a mellow moodm. As for the lyrics, I was thinking exactly what JM was saying about them. Imo, Awake is DT's best album.
You can tell this was one of Myung's songs - Awesome bass. Possibly their most Bass-Oriented song on the album, besides Space-Dye Vest.
All in all - 10/10.
Beautiful song. Awake is one of my favourite albums. Scenes from a memory is my top, as it is quite lyrically intelligent and creative
