Jesus (Don't Touch My Baby) Lyrics

In California
Forever summer and hot
Into the ocean
You're smiling a lot
On sandy beaches
And the blankets are hot
You're in my arms
And I kiss your heart
Jesus, don't touch my baby
Jesus, don't touch my baby
Jesus, don't touch my baby
She's all that I got

Reflections coming
In through the sheets
You love your baby
are sweet
Out on the highway
We ride tonight
Jesus don't know you
He was just saying Hi
Don't touch my baby
Jesus, don't touch my baby

I read it more as a song about falling in love with a girl who's considering Christianity, and the narrator (possibly Adams, maybe not) feels like he could lose her to religion, like she won't be the same person if she converts. The line "Jesus don't know you / He was just saying hi" to me sounds like she had a brief flirtation with Christianity and he's saying, "Don't take her from me, Jesus," because he doesn't believe in what she's leaning toward.

That might be a radical interpretation, but that's definitely how I see it.

Christianity really? This song is about someone close to Ryan that's dying or about to die but he doesn't want Jesus to "take" her away from him.

"Jesus, don't touch my baby She's all that I got"

Jesus touch is like a metaphor for dying in this song.

Ftr, it's not "you're in my arms", it's "through the magnolias." ...Amazing song by an amazing song writer.

In 2002, Ryan said "Written about the same subject as 'Tomorrow'. My California phase was actually quite creative. That was when I found out that my friend was sick. It was during a Pink Hearts session and I was so upset I kicked them all out of the studio. But I needed to be busy doing something, so I started playing around with this drum machine and this came out. Think I'd been listening to too much Radiohead when I recorded it."

So that's why to me it sounds a little bit like the Kid A track, this is not a copy of course, but it reminded me of that track when I first heard this song. Thanks!

I can't explain what Ryan's voice does to me when I listen to this song. It moves me in a tiring way, tired of trying, tired of complaining, tired of love. Incredible ending song.

He's in an argument with Jesus, one of the purest human manifestations of love. The argument is this: if she gets to have perfect love, what's going to happen to me? Hence the line, "She's all I got..."

His voice is tired and imperfect, just the way it should be.

He wrote this song shortly after the death of his one-time lover Carrie Hamilton.

The first time I heard it, I didn't "get" it, but afterwards it grew on me gradually.
