Gimme a Sign Lyrics

Here's a picture of your lonely Fridays
Turned to nothing on a Friday night
Firecracker with a pile of empties
Detonated with a lonely fire
I see your face, I hear your voice
I touch the phone and wonder
Is this explosion gonna set me reeling?
Or just another thing to pull me under?
If you could give me anything tonight
Just a wink, or even just a sigh
I'll be okay, 'cause I've been waiting for a sign
I've been waiting for a sign, to come
Are you the one?

And I was breathless on a Sunday morning
And I was speechless on a Sunday night
For a lack of better understanding
Felt like an engine that just didn't need a tire
I see your face, I hear your voice
I touch the screen and wonder
And I been waiting for the sun to tell me
It's just been sitting here, I don't know why
If you could give me anything tonight
Just a wink, or even just a sigh
I'll be okay, 'cause I've been waiting for a sign
I've been waiting for a sign
I've been waiting for a sign
To come

I think this song is kind of confusing, but I love it. The music is freaking incredible... Ryan Adams is my hero. Anyway, I think it is referring to a guy who is lonley and possibly sexually frustrated "firecracker with a pile of empties/ detonated with a lonley fire". And he's waiting for a girl to give him the go-ahead. He keeps waiting for anything to tell him to go after what/who he wants. Ok, so I guess its not all that complicated. Still a great, fun song.

God. Only ONE comment??! You're kidding me, right?? Not only waiting for the sign that the girl reciprocates, but also a sign that she's "the one."

Great song! In 2002, Ryan said "Written the day before I met Ms. Winona Ryder. She was passing through, I was fooling about in the studio with The Pink Hearts. That's how I remember it. It was a really good week. I think I wrote it about an American sit-com about vampires called 'Dark Shadows'. But I don't remember too well. When The Pink Hearts are around a lot of pot tends to get smoked."
