Tennessee Sucks Lyrics
There you go
Waving your arms like a girl
Suckin' down your cloves
Don't worry, nobody knows
Somebody order my round
'Cause I'm getting by
With a twelve pack from 12th & Porter with Billy
4:30 a.m. at night
'Cause Tennessee sucks, in the summer
What do you got that can put us under?
There goes Johnny B.
Weird and tall
He says The band, they've got good songs,
They just don't draw
Somebody order my round
Chances are I won't pay
Hey Brad, let's go down to The Bound'ry
Get something blue to put us out of our way
'Cause Tennessee sucks, in the summer
What do you got that can put us under?
Waving your arms like a girl
Suckin' down your cloves
Don't worry, nobody knows
'Cause I'm getting by
With a twelve pack from 12th & Porter with Billy
4:30 a.m. at night
What do you got that can put us under?
Weird and tall
He says The band, they've got good songs,
They just don't draw
Chances are I won't pay

Get something blue to put us out of our way
What do you got that can put us under?

I live in Nashville, the town he is talking about. I think this song is hilarious and on days when it is 95 degrees and the 100% humidity, you totally believe it. This is our #1 drinking song. Bound'ry happens to be a great place to eat and 12th and Porter was my favorite bar, but is unfortunately closed now. Sorry Ryan, we tried to save it!
This song meaning actually has a funny story behind it. Ryan Adams was playing a show in Nashville at the Ryman auditorium (very close and personal concert venue). "Waving your arms like a little girl" is referring to a fan who called out "Play summer of 69'" which is performed by an artist named BRYAN Adams. For some reason Ryan got EXTREMELY pissed off (probably because its the 1000th time he had heard the joke) and left the show. Later this incident inspired Ryan Adams to write the song "Tennessee Sucks".
"Tennessee Sucks" is such a cool song. It's so carefree and relaxing. Great stuff.

Ryan says "That song is about Tennessee really sucking. Ha! It sucks in the summer, worse even than New York. It's not only hot but really humid. Even the beer doesn't help you. I wrote it as a gag. It's from the second of the Pink Hearts sessions on the record, with Bucky playing some really fucked-up Paul Simon guitar shit that I don't know what it is. There's another song on the same subject called 'Saturday Night' that almost made the record."
