I used to listen to this song as a university kid 30 years ago. A friend recorded for me a tape of "The Specials" on one side and "Sound Effects", on the other. I remember "Dream Time" immediately followed the greatest song ever written, "That's Entertainment". This song was definitely overshadowed by the above mentioned "That's Entertainment"...I could not get enough listening to these 2 amazing songs back to back.
To me, Dream Time almost plays as a deluded music video of the time. There are tonnes of imagery. The song begins with a psychedelic reverse guitar, followed by an explosion of sound. Whenever I listen to the passage, "Tough with their heads", I think of a man in the fish department of a supermarket, chopping off heads of various varieties of fish.
The music builds in tempo and instrumentation followed by a marching band-- a very trippy song describing a bad dream the Modfather had.
As a Canadian, who loves all music British, The Jam stand out as the best of the best; their music has not aged 1 day, and is still relevant.
