When you're stoned, baby, I am drunk
We make love seems a little dazzler
It's hard sometimes not to look away
And think what's the point when I'm having to hold this fine time
I think I'll explode if I can't feel this free now
[Chorus:]
If you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best things I would love to do for you
Instead you will be missing me when I go
As I want to hang it out in your coat
I feel love baby, joy in the road
And the world moves with me
I feel love start just slip away silently
Quietly take the things and go
And think what's the point, think where's the hope when coming home
[Chorus]
And if you find one day, find some freedom merrily
With this freedom maybe, maybe you will find some peace
With this peace baby, I hope it brings you back to me
Bring you home, take me home
[Chorus]
Oh, take me home
Oh, take me home
When you're stoned, baby, take me home
Oh...
We make love seems a little dazzler
It's hard sometimes not to look away
And think what's the point when I'm having to hold this fine time

This song fits so perfect how I feel toward girls who I want to love. -Im a guy by the way.
"If you wont let me fall for you" - she means that the guys dont want to completely fall in love with her, cos she wants to give him her whole heart.
I feel the same way, sometimes to my sister also.
I really have a big heart and knows when someone is not giving you their complete selves. Cos you can love them SO MUCH and give them everything they want ("then you wont see the best thing i would love to do for you")
So what happens they 'realise' after the relationship how strongly I can really love people and give them the world and want you back cos they kinda missed their chance at real love ("...instead you will be missing me when I go")
She sounds like someone who really is true to herself, cos only then can you know how to trully love others. Im like that too!
With Love:-)
in the second line it's "desolate" not "dazzler", in the chorus it's "bored of hanging out in your cold"
Basically about a girl who hangs out with this boy while they're both buzzed. Their relationship revolves around chemical induced feeling, not real. She wants him to want her as more than a narcotic buddy.
That's how I see it, anyways--
reminds me sort of of my situation with this boy I hang out with every now and then. We get high and have sex, and that's all we have. But, like the narrator of the song, I want more.
This is one of my favorite Dido songs...I love her lyrics. She wants him to be more and to feel more for him but she can't when he's being the way he's being. "Cuz I'm bored of hanging out in your cold" I love "if you won't let me fall for you"
I never understood the "hanging out in your cold" but its always been one of my favorite songs and its so upbeat.
Agree, it's got a great hypnotic yet upbeat tune. Also, I think she's singing "Hanging out when you're cold" not in. So as to imply that he's unfeeling when he's under influence. At least that's what I hear.

I never understood the meaning of this song.... until I went through what she was going through in this song...

She is having fun with a guy she likes, and could potentially fall in love with, by having nsa sex while getting stoned/drunk with him. He is the type of guy who obviously doesn't want a serious committed relationship because he's probably in the time of his life where he just wants to have fun. Although it may be all fun and full of lust at first, nothing will ever get as intense as being intimate with someone you're in...
She is having fun with a guy she likes, and could potentially fall in love with, by having nsa sex while getting stoned/drunk with him. He is the type of guy who obviously doesn't want a serious committed relationship because he's probably in the time of his life where he just wants to have fun. Although it may be all fun and full of lust at first, nothing will ever get as intense as being intimate with someone you're in love with. "If [he] won't let [her] fall for [him]" means if she isn't able feel anything else with him, then he will never see the love and passion she would have shared with him.
If she knows she can't take a step further with this guy, then "what's the point" of trying to seek a full connection and turning it into a real relationship. So she's hitting a dead-end road now and the excitement of their lust will eventually die. This is why she is starting to feel "bored of hanging out in [his] cold".
During the bridge, "And if you find, one day, find some freedom and relief, then with this freedom, baby, maybe you will find some peace. And with this peace, baby, I hope it brings you home to me."
She says she hopes he will come to a place in his life where he is able to love someone and accept their love for him as well. She hopes that when he is ready to love again, he will think of her.
These lyrics have been terribly reproduced. Here's a better rendering:
When you're stoned, baby, and I am drunk, and we make love, it seems a little desolate. It's hard sometimes not to look away and say “what's the point?” when I'm trying to hold this fire down. I think I'll explode if I can't feel this freely now.
‘Cause if you won't let me fall for you, then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you. Instead, you will be missing me when I go, ‘cause I'm bored of hanging out in your cold.
When I feel loved, baby, I join the room and the world moves with me. When I feel lost, I just slip away, silently, quietly take my things and go, and say "what's the point?" Say "Where's the hope?" I'm coming home.
‘Cause if you won't let me fall for you, then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you. Instead, you will be missing me when I go, ‘cause I'm bored of hanging out in your cold.
And if you find, one day, find some freedom and relief, then with this freedom, baby, maybe you will find some peace. And with this peace, baby, I hope it brings you home to me. Bring you home-- take me home.
‘Cause if you won't let me fall for you, then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you. Instead, you will be missing me when I go, ‘cause I'm bored of hanging out in your cold.
Oh, take me home. Oh, take me home. When you're stoned, baby, take me home.
What a brilliant song, one of my faves on the album. I also wondered what 'bored of hanging out in your cold' could mean Jennytisme; I think it refers to the lack of satisfaction (boredom) of being around someone who is too driven by lust while stoned to feel any emotion or love. Suitenoise, I really think you should give the second album a go; listen to Stoned you will realise that it is not a bog-standard love song. You gain the sense that Dido is longing to love and be loved, but does not imply that getting stoned is a basis for love - quite the opposite I think.
Also, couldn't help but chuckle at the lyrics posted originally - David Dickinson springs to mind on the second line :o)
"I want to hang it out in your coat". Perhaps Dido is portraying herself as a moth, and has eaten her way through the whole coat, and now she's looking for new pastures but the coat doesn't want her to leave because otherwise it will get thrown away.
Tragic.
Anyway, I think "When I feel lost I just slip away silently" is showing how she has to leave because he never really noticed her anyway, and he's only using her for sex. Which she likes, but she wants more.
I think by "bored of hanging out in your cold" she means she is tired of just being there as a last resort.
