I'm pretty sure this is about the aftermath of a long relationship that meant everything to the protagonist of the song. He becomes numb (I lie to those who love me by reciprocating...), self-loathing and an alcoholic, and he's an anchor who ends up dragging his friends down with him by constantly wallowing in his misery.

I think this is the single defining part of the whole song's meanings. My interpretation is that it means he was bordering on the decision of breaking up with her, or already did. And all she had to do was prove that she cared, and everything would be alright again. But all she ended up proving was that she didn't give a shit
