Bent Lyrics

if i bent like you said was best,
would that change a thing?
if i spent myself... or what's left
would you still leave me here?

you're so sorry about it all
now that it's over..
should i thank you for that dear?
you're so sorry about it all...
and i hope you'll always be.

i remember you best
hating all the boys who got to you
and all the things they took
that you'd kept for yourself
every car crash, every misstep, every word

you're so sorry about it all
now that it's over..
should i thank you for that dear?
you're so sorry about it all...
and i hope you'll always be
always be.

i remember you best
hating all the boys who got to you
and all the things they took from you again...
it's all wrong...all wrong

It is about a selfish girl. He's rhetorically asking that if he did everything she said and bent over backwards for her, would she have stayed? Would it have changed? He knows it wouldn't have.

When he's apologizing to her, he's doing so sarcastically.

Only an Arschloch would believe such an idiotic thing.

In your world, you're always the victim, right?

Did it never occur to you that maybe he lacked the emotional capacity to love her? And instead of try, he wrote a song that pricks like you would use to justify why that really awesome girl broke up with you.

Get over your Scheisse. Grow up. And maybe the next awesome girl who gives you a shot will have someone with whom she can grow.

Beautiful song. I think it's about a girl who is really selfish and she ruined her relationship with someone because of it.

I think he might be talking about changing who you are for someone, and wondering if that did or would have made a difference. Sad song.

Did anyone notice this song sounds EXACTLY like Brand New's "Am I Wrong"?

They are so similar....I wonder who copied who

Well, the original "Am I Wrong" is by Love Spit Love. Brand New just did a cover of it. But I agree that "Bent" sounds much more like the Brand New version than the Love Spit Love version. However, both were released before Beneath These Fireworks, so it's quite possible that Matt was heavily influenced by "Am I Wrong".

wow yeah it does! well the brand new song is a love spit lvoe cover so i pressume they were around before matt? like matt's lyrics better though.

I think he's using the term "bent" to imply that his ex-girlfriend told him to "Get bent!"

She was being a bitch to him and so he ended the relationship because he didn't feel like he was good enough. She came back apologizing but he didn't forgive her. He instead hopes that she'll just be sorry about it forever. If you listen to this live on the album At The Point you can hear him ending the song with the chorus from "Such Great Heights". It's a longshot but I think that might have been "their song" (him and the girl in this song).

Alright, here's my take on the song. I went through this kind of relationship and this song really hit me hard when that relationship ended. I feel as if when he says "if i bent like you said was best, would that change a thing" he's referring to a girl, who's broken up with him but willing to give him another chance if he's willing to change his ways. but, the way he sees it is, he's changed and done everything she's asked of him because he's so obsessed with her he feels he needs her he'd do anything to get her back, so he does EVERYTHING she asks, and nothing changes. Then in the chorus he's saying he's sorry for being a shitty boyfriend (sarcastically) and should he thank her for giving him that second chance...? then he says "and i hope you'll always be." but stops himself because he realizes that she'll never be his again. The second verse he brings up all her faults that she kept from everyone that he is aware of, but because she kept them from everyone she's still able to get the other guys cuz she seems perfect on the outside. at the end he says "it was wrong...all wrong" referring to the whole relationship was a mistake, he thought he knew her but he didn't, and all she did was lead him on again by telling him he could still have her and once he changed and did these things to get her back, she wouldn't take him. "women suck" is the moral of matt nathanson's songs. except laid. that song says "sex is awesome"

a piece is missing from the end, at least the version i have:

goodnight, farewell was i everything you wanted was i everything you wanted goodnight, farewell you said i was everything i was your everything

they will see us waving from such great heights come down now, they'll say

cuz everything looks perfect from far away come down now we'll stay

I too have heard this version, and it is beautiful. Matt Nathanson is the most amazing man alive. The last 2 stanzas you typed were actually from a Postal Service song called Such Great Heights so I guess he thought it fit well in Bent.

this song is amazing. my favorite part is the end: i remember you best hating all the boys who got to you and all the things they took from you again... it's all wrong...all wrong and i think hes in a relationship with someone who has been hurt before and he really loves her but she can't give her whole self to him and it crushes him and she needs things from him that he can't give to her and her hopes are just too high and she's just too distant for both of them to be happy

i think its about a guy whos thinking back to a past relationship, what he couldve done to change it, and how he still cares about the other person now.

he misses the person but things are entirely different now. he doesnt know if he couldve changed anything throughout it that wouldve made it different. he hates how things are between things are between them now but knows that theyll never be together again. the girl took a part of him. and when he sees her with other people it hurts him too, and upsets him more when he sees other guys hurt her.
