Keep saying no to her since she was a baby
Keep saying no to her not even maybe
Why? Why?
You say there´s a limit there, she can´t go past that
She don´t believe you, she don´t think that´s where it´s at
Why? Why?
You say she can´t change that, it´s the way you´ve always done it
She don´t care about that, she thinks you´ve just begun it
Why? Why?
You say it´s a dead old world, dull and unforgiving
I don´t know where you live, but you´re not living
Why? Why?
Keep saying no to her since she was a baby
Keep saying no to her not even maybe
Why? Why?
Keep saying no to her not even maybe
Why? Why?
She don´t believe you, she don´t think that´s where it´s at
Why? Why?
She don´t care about that, she thinks you´ve just begun it
Why? Why?
I don´t know where you live, but you´re not living
Why? Why?
Keep saying no to her not even maybe
Why? Why?

Why is a classic depiction of two very different views of life. When it came out in 1967 the hippie movement was at its height and we were rebelling, like the girl in the song,at all the liimits the adult world had put on us. They said the world was a hard cold place. We knew that our parents lived ina world where their joy had been crushed long ago.We were out to create a new reality.Whether we did or not is not the point."We'had just begun it"and no longer wanted to be slaves to the death culture
Oh that makes sense. It guess it's really obvious, but I didn't quite get that it was showing two conflicting perspectives with the last verse coming from the older generation. I just thought it came a little out of nowhere. Anyway, there's something about the "not even maybe" in the chorus that makes me laugh every time, even though it's kind of sad.
