Across The Rainbow Bridge Lyrics

My days are numbered: soon I have to leave
The Horns have stretched my living thread
The notion of my demise won't leave me be
Why cannot death just set me free!

I've lived a life or prosperity
But I'm not as young as I used to be
Down the road waits misery
Why cannot death just set me free!

Countless armies have I attacked
Not once have I backed down
And though I've spilled a lot of blood
I never once received a mortal wound

I've raided shores in many lands
I cannot count the men I've killed
So many friends died with sword in hand
But the warrior's death was never granted me

I dress myself in battle clothes
Alone I make the final ride
My sight is blurred, by whipping snow
I seek to end my life

I want to walk across the Rainbow Bridge
And see my fathers in the golden hall
They beckon me to join their feast
In my dreams I hear their call

The song is about a warrior who wishes he could have had a 'warriors death', he wishes to die in battle, but throughout his years of fighting it was never granted to him, and hes too old to go fight so he rides off in his battle clothes to kill himself.

ps-im sure its a typo but life or prosperity should be life of prosperity

From what I know, suicide was considered unhonorable by the norsemen, so he would end up in Helheim instead of Valhalla. ;)

Well he won't commit suicide but goes out to die in valiant battle - just knowing that he will not return from an unsurpassable foe is not suicide ;)

You don't have to be so literal with regard to Norse mythology. It's pretty obvious the band themselves take artistic liberties when it comes to the details.

According to Norse Mythology, the Rainbow Bridge was a realm in the form of a rainbow that took mortals from Midgard (land of the living) to Aasgard (land of the gods).

I think he is going to seek death, not through suicide but he might go and fight enemies and hope he once dies.

also another typo its not "the horns have stretched my living thread" it's "the Norns have stretched my living thread" as the Norns were goddesses who determined the length of life of each man by cutting a thread to signify the life line

and also its "so many faces died with sword in hand" not "so many friends"

Wrong. By saying "so many friends with sword in hand" they mean that those friends died fighting and this is the purpose of a viking warrior: dying in a battle.

Also if you look at the next sentence it begins with "but"; meaning it must have an opposite statement from the previous sentence.
