Weak Become Heroes Lyrics
Turn left up the street
Nothing but grey concrete and deadbeats
Grab something to eat, Maccy D's or KFC
Only one choice in the city, done voicing my pity
Now let's get to the nitty gritty
tune reminds me of my first E played unique
Still 16 and feeling horny
Point the sky and feel free
Sea of people all equal
Smiles in front and behind me
Swim in the deep blue sea corn fields sway lazily
All smiles all easy
Where ya from, what ya on and what's ya story?
Mezmorizing tones rising pianos, this is my zone so stop cloning
Pick paper scissors or stone 'cause me and you are the same
I known you all my life I don't know your name
(Name's European Bob Sorted, anyway)
We'll have a dance now see ya later
Pleased to meet ya - likewise, a pleasure
We all smile
We all sing
The night slowly fades and goes slow motion
All the commotion becomes floating emotions
Same piano loops over, arms wave eyes roll back
And jaws fall open, see in soft focus
chatting to this bloke in the toilets
Dizzy new heights blinded by the lights
These people are for life
Its all back to his place at the end of the night
Yo, they could settle wars with this
If only they will, imagine the world's leaders on pills
And imagine the morning after, falls causing disaster
Don't talk to me I don't know ya, but this ain't tomorrow
For now I still love ya, hours fly over
Sail around diamonds and pearls
Never seen so many fit girls
Discover new worlds, look at my watch can't focus
Last two hours are lost every move fills me with lust
All of Life's problems I just shake off
Yo, mad little events happen
Things map out in a few blue
madams alight the toilets
Big beefy bouncers out to reveal us
Geezers on E's and first timers
Kids on wiz darlings on Charlie
All come together for this party
All races many faces from places you never heard of
Where ya from, what's ya name and what ya on?
Sing to the words vex to the fat ones
The tribal drums the sun's rising
We all smile
We all sing
Then the girl in the cafe taps me on the shoulder
I realize five years went by and I'm older
Memories smolder, winter's colder
But that same piano loops over and over and over
The road shines and the rain washes away
Same Chinese take-away selling shit in a tray
Its dark all around I walk down same sights same sounds
New beats, though, solid concrete under my feet
No surprises no treats
The world stands still as my mind sloshes around
The washing up bowl in my crown
The life's been up and down since I walked from that crowd
We all smile
We all sing
Out of respect for Johnnie Walker, Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway
Danny Rampling and all the people who gave us these times
And to the government, I stick my middle finger up
With regards to the criminal justice bill
For all the heroes out and on the way
We all sing
Nothing but grey concrete and deadbeats
Grab something to eat, Maccy D's or KFC
Only one choice in the city, done voicing my pity
Now let's get to the nitty gritty
tune reminds me of my first E played unique

i sorta see this song as the mindset of a raver.
The bit that really gets to me, personally is:
then the girl in the cafe' taps me on the shoulder i realise 5yrs went by and i'm older memories smoulder winters colder but that same piano loops over and over and over the road shines and the rain washes away same chinese takeaway selling shit in a tray it's dark all round i walk down same sights same sounds new beats though
It's a simple meaning, about time passing before your eyes, and you don't even notice until it hits you, and how it all stays generally the same "same chinese takeaway/selling shit in a tray" and "same sights, same sounds/new beats though"
i hear the line as "we were just standing there minding our own..."
"i sorta see this song as the mindset of a raver."
NO SHIT!
"to someone who isn't that bright in the wide world of hard drugs."
X isnt a hard drug in any sense
This song is about the experience of rave culture, and how that provided (for some) a view of the world that allowed outcasts to be stars, the losers to be winners; the "weak become heroes".
"The night slowly fades and goes slow motion All the commotion becomes floating emotions Same piano loops over"
Rave culture is full of people who never "fit in" popular culture; the nerds and freaks and hippies. Through the experience of this music, dancing, and social space, they were able to overcome their alienation and access the beauty of the world and each-other.
"Sea of people, all equal Smiles are front and behind me Swim in the deep blue sea corn fields sway lazily All smiles all easy"
At a rave, you're often on drugs like MDMA, which provide (at least for the first few trips) a glimpse of absolute beauty and tenderness, a mysterious personal connection with friends and strangers. Of course, when the morning comes and the drugs run out, that connection can be lost. It is a fragile absolute. The Streets point toward this contradiction, and its bittersweet reality; just because the feeling is gone doesn't mean the experience needs to be lost. You can keep that feeling, but only if you integrate it into your life and use it to improve your personality and clarity of vision; the experience, and your fate as a human being, is defined and understood in retrospect.
"All come together for this party All races many faces from places you never heard of Where ya from, what's ya name and what ya want? Sing to the words fecks to the fat ones The tribal drums the sun's rising We all smile We all sing"
Mike gives us the point of view of looking back on rave culture, which was for many people the bridge from childhood to adolescence, and then the growth into adulthood. This song evokes the nostalgia of growing up, because it is only as an adult that you can understand the meaning behind these experiences.
"then the girl in the cafe' taps me on the shoulder I realize 5yrs went by and I'm older memories smoulder winters colder but that same piano loops over and over and over"
yeah it is
having tried mdma, this song can make alot more sense to someone like me then to someone who isn't that bright in the wide world of hard drugs. Look at the deeper meaning and you'll see how poetic this is, and how mikes physical description, not emotional, can make a song alot better
The best Streets song yet.
I looove this song. It makes me happy everytime i listen to it. It's supossed to say "minding our own" but i keep hearing "hara home".
the title gives away the meaning of the song as it is about how one may feel weak in real life but when you are in the nightclub and everyone is either mashed or wasted etc everyone is your best friend and your all seem together for this one night "weak become heroes." "coz me and you are da same known you all me life i dont know your name" is a conversation with the average guy at the nightclub who you don't really know but becomes your best friend. Then the section "realise 5yrs went by and i'm older" symbolising moving time and how things never change and lifes still shit but you can still go to the club and experience a whole new life. This can be compared to Pulp's Sorted for E's and Whizz which gives off a similar idea.
