Baby
Black, black, black is all you see
Don't you want to be free?
Baby
Red, red fire is what you breathe
Don't you want to be clean?
Honey, the shape you're in
Is worth every dime you spent
Baby Doll
Turn out the lights
Set yourself on fire
Say goodnight
Did you have a real cool time?
Baby
Black, black, black is all you see
Don't you want to be free?
Black, black, black is all you see
Don't you want to be free?
Baby
Red, red fire is what you breathe
Don't you want to be clean?
Honey, the shape you're in
Is worth every dime you spent
Baby Doll
Turn out the lights
Set yourself on fire
Say goodnight
Did you have a real cool time?
Baby
Black, black, black is all you see
Don't you want to be free?

Chan Marshall once mentioned in an interview, that one of the reasons she started playing music was because all her friends were into heroin & other hard drugs and she didn't want anything to do with that, and needed something to express her anguish & isolation from them.
I'm pretty sure this song is about a friend/lover who does heroin - turn out the lights/set yourself on fire/say goodnight definitely sounds like shooting up and passing out into oblivion, hence the frequent mention of black/darkness. I think if you look at it like that, it's really pretty clear.
agreed.. i shot up heroin 4+ times a day for almost two years straight. my theme song was "little one" by elliott smith, but this song could have very well been as well.

I can't quite pinpoint what she's trying to say in this one. All I can get out of it is that someone's miserable. Someone help.
i love this song, the 1st cat power song i ever heard. stunning
I agree with Zerocharisma, Like before I never really understood it but i still loved it, and now I really know what Im listening to. And it is very clear to me that yeah this is like about drugs. "did you have a real cool time" "is it worth every dime" "dont you want to be free"...Yeah.
My favorite Cat Power song.
I agree with you, zerocharisma. It's funny because I listened to this song on drugs and now reading back on the lyrics, and listening to it again, I definately feel like it narrated that night for me. It's a beautiful song, and now it has a new meaning for me.
"set yourself on fire"? this reminded me of stars
