I think this song is about taking drugs but he called it Chocolate(something that we joke about as addictive,eg a chocoholic) because he couldn't call it "heroin". He says he's sorry but he still enjoyed it at the time. That would be the guilt he is feeling as we attach a stigma to drugs and we are taught they are wrong. Drugs are the only things he loves as this is what happens when you become an addict. he says "what have I done" meaning he regrets getting addicted but "it's too late" and he is a slave to drugs "I promise I'll do anything you ask" and his life revolves around them like what happens to most drug addicts ("you're the only thing that I love" but it still "scares" him) He feels "alive" as this is the first time he has taken them. He "lies to you" as addicts often cover up what they are doing. "he saw it coming" as he is trying to tell himself he can control it. He is on "his knees" as this is the image we always have of someone injecting. Not that I think he's a heroin addict though. favourite song of last few years.
@nickymcgla Hi, I know I may be inevitably late on this one, but I think I like your analysis to these lyrics the best. I mean sure, this song - as do many of Gary's songs - are about a struggle in some relationship, but I think you're on to something when you are associating his lyrics with some sort of substance abuse. You say it's drugs, but if it is anything he would be writing of within the struggles of addiction, it would most likely be alcohol. Gary (lead singer and also songwriter of the band, as you may know him), suffered through an agonizing conflict with alcohol addiction and depression. The timing of this song may as well indicate whether that is or isn't the case, because he did mention it was a 7 year battle. (He says currently that he is 2 years sober, now at the age of 42 - with it being 2019, subtract 2 and you get 2017. That may be the year in which he decided to turn his life around. So around 2007, may be where his addiction starts? Idk, that may be too technical.) Anyways, why I find your out look on these lyrics so much more intriguing, is the part when he says, "you're the only thing that I love, it scares me more every day...". Sure, once again it may be about a girl he has now realized he absolutely loves, and now is utterly galvanized at the mere fact of loosing her, but look at it this way. Just as you explain, he may be realizing that alcohol (his drug of choice), is his only love, and it scares him more at the fact that his addiction and need of alcohol is becoming stronger and uncontrollable each day. Thank you so much for your opinion on this song, as it has made me look at this song in new light. Also, his pleas of forgiveness in this song may be directed toward himself, and not to a lover, as he is trying to get himself out of this situation. Absolutely amazing observation, and creative outlook. Not going to say any more, as you have pretty much covered all the genius. Well done.
