Ocean Spray Lyrics
me-totemo-utsukushi-i-desu-ne / totemo-utsukushi-i-me-wo-shitemasu
It's easy to see, it's easy to see
To see only white where colour should be
It's easy to feel, it's easy to feel
But it's not good enough, even though it's real
please stay away
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
please stay away
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
It's easy to breathe, it's easy to breathe
To breathe only air where life should be
It's easy to laugh, it's easy to cry
To cry so so hard that it can't be denied
please stay awake
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
please stay awake
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
To see only white where colour should be
It's easy to feel, it's easy to feel
But it's not good enough, even though it's real
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
please stay away
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
To breathe only air where life should be
It's easy to laugh, it's easy to cry
To cry so so hard that it can't be denied
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray
please stay awake
And then we can drink some Ocean Spray

Ocean Spray, Crannberry juice, Also a placebo for sick people in hospital. Written for Jame's late mother who died of cancer in 1999, This is also the first song james has written for the group
i think that the correct lyrics is "oh, please stay awake" which would make alot more sense as the song is about james' dying mother. it truly is a stunning song once you understand the meaning of it.
It reminds me a lot of "Tied Up Too Tight" by Hard-Fi.
It is just such a sad song--so very beautiful, especially the japanese bit at the beginning, just beautiful
well it may be a placebo but it is meant to help.. i have a friend whose mother had cancer and drank ocean spray.. maybe just maybe it works... a beautiful song though it must mean so much to him
Touching, really touching. And James is an OK lyricist too. Does anyone know what the Japanese bit means?
great song.simple and beautiful.japanese part is quote by photographer of manics, mitch ikeda, and it means "oh, you've got beautiful eyes."
i don't quite understand the purpose of the grungey guitar bit after the choruses.
Regarding the grungey guitar bit, I think it's because even though he wants the drink to hlep her he knows it won't, so the guitar is showing his frustration at not being able too much of a difference. Perfect example of why I love the Manics, using guitars to escape the sadness.

The Japanese roughly means, "You have very beautiful eyes don't you They are very beautiful" Its a quote from Mitch Ikeda.
"With Ocean Spray I associate a sad experience. It is a lovesong for my mother — she died one and a half years ago. Sean plays the trumpet." (James, Guitar 02/01)
"It was the first time I felt I could actually write a lyric and it wouldn't be crass. Some people dedicate a park bench or they plant a tree. I write a song. It's just about watching somebody die. When people are in hospital they're told to drink a lot of cranberry juice because of infections and my mum would say, Go and get us some Ocean Spray cranberry juice. There is an indelible strength in the human spirit if you can convince yourself that Ocean Spray will go towards keeping you alive. Besides the pure horror of it all there are certain things that do make you want to carry on." (James, Q 03/01)
"James wrote half the lyrics to 'Ocean Spray' on this; you could tell it's a special song for him because it's about his mum who died of cancer. He was very bashful and very shy, he was just in the corner kinda playing it. And we all knew he had this brilliant tune and he was just mumbling away and I said "Y'know you've obviously written some words; y'know I'm not bothered." Y'know he had it was very touching and beautiful and Sean kinda did his tribute with a trumpet solo because Sean's a classically trained trumpeter when he was young. And I ended up writing half the lyrics towards the end as well so it was just a perfect; that's a perfect snapshot of how the album went really that we all chipped in with different things and different ideas and it was much more liberation in the record."
