I walk through fields that haunt my dreams, this time I fear it’s broken me,
I tasted you so brief yet sweet, the morning comes it’s choking me,
It’s the way you always left me coming down,
In a sea of painted whispers did I drown.
I’m so tired, I’m so wired,
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried,
I’m so tired, I’m so wired,
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried…
I battle through these thunderclouds to find my way to fields of gold,
Somehow I always see your face,
Things aren’t always what they seem, pretenders all just falling at your feet,
C’mon love, I reached the tree now let me see,
It’s the way you always left me coming down,
In a sea of painted whispers did I drown.
I’m so tired, I’m so wired,
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried,
I’m so tired, I’m so wired,
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried…
And they say that you can reach the sky upon your knees and without pride,
I’m screaming, but my needs have chained me to the ground…
Shine for me, walk with me now…
I tasted you so brief yet sweet, the morning comes it’s choking me,
In a sea of painted whispers did I drown.
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried,
I’m so tired, I’m so wired,
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried…
Somehow I always see your face,
Things aren’t always what they seem, pretenders all just falling at your feet,
C’mon love, I reached the tree now let me see,
In a sea of painted whispers did I drown.
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried,
I’m so tired, I’m so wired,
It’s not enough to pray for Mercy I’ve tried…
I’m screaming, but my needs have chained me to the ground…

I love the guitar work in this song. It's so rich and melancholy.
This song basically talks about a break up. She no longer wants him, and while the relationship was brief, he's still pining for her.
Love is like a drug, and he's "wired," and he tells her that he's not like all the other 'pretenders' who fall at her feet.
One of my favourite lines are: "In a sea of painted whispers did I drown." As if all the words she said were 'painted whispers', lies, or explanations of why the relationship couldn't last. And the fact that he 'drowns' in these words is so emotive.
I wonder about the line, "It’s the way you always left me coming down" - perhaps she also abused the relationship, or perhaps didn't treasure him enough?
Basically he's tired from wanting her so badly and wants to stop feeling the pain of heartbreak; he wants "mercy" from it all.
"And they say that you can reach the sky upon your knees and without pride, I’m screaming, but my needs have chained me to the ground…"
"I battle through these thunderclouds to find my way to fields of gold, somehow I always see your face"
She's his sunshine and happiness even though she's hurt him so badly.
But I think what's more interesting is how the same words/ideas permeate throughout all of "Caught by the window"
Honestly, whoever reads this, listen to the entire album and listen how there are very similar ideas, descriptions and words on many of the songs.
Dreams, thunderclouds, ghosts, broken, the "tree"(especially in alright), hope/hopelessness, time
Look for yourself, and you'll come to an unbelievable discovery!
