Alabaster Lyrics
on the outside looking in
i've never been able to crack the code
to break the secret spell
that would open up the door and let me in
to everything I've been looking for so hard I've never seen
but I feel my strength returning tonight
its flowing from the purest well to ever give water
It spills out into an ocean where the sharks are circling
a carnival of counterfeits has no room for something real
arrogance and ego wrapped around every word
shouted from the pulpit as a judgment to control
these were my roots my seed was thrown in shallow soil
I grew into the thorn bushes to be scorched by the sun
but I feel the gravel move beneath my feet
the smell of the gasoline mixed in with the trees
when my faith is strong I know my strength
the threats will be screamed when the vultures fell threatened
so I'll open up the door and let you in
I want to break the alabaster smell the sweet perfume
and when the bottle is broken I'll have nothing left to give
I'll know I'll already have everything worth having
but I feel my strength returning tonight
its flowing from the purest well to ever give water
it spills out into and ocean where the sharks are circling
a carnival of counterfeits want to crucify something real
i've never been able to crack the code
to break the secret spell
that would open up the door and let me in
to everything I've been looking for so hard I've never seen
but I feel my strength returning tonight
its flowing from the purest well to ever give water
It spills out into an ocean where the sharks are circling
a carnival of counterfeits has no room for something real
shouted from the pulpit as a judgment to control
these were my roots my seed was thrown in shallow soil
I grew into the thorn bushes to be scorched by the sun

i cant believe no one has commented on rocky, he and his music are amazing... you guys really should check his stuff out, he puts his heart into his music, i saw him a while back, it was a really small show, and i got to meet him, really nice guy, hes got a good future
definitely one of my favorite songs by him. i cant help but notice the references to the bible and the song title itself is biblical. i cant figure out what it means though, or if this song has a point.
the biblical references are fairly deliberate i think. i'm not sure about rocky's views on faith or anything, but it seems to me that he's describing growing up around the church or at least in a situation where people of influence were arrogant and abused their position. he's describing pharisees when he talks about the "carnival of counterfeits." this is literal and figurative, in that this is exactly how christ is treated and its how rocky feels when he comes up against these types of people, yet he knows exactly who he is and where he stands. rocky knows exactly where his strength comes from, whether he's being deliberate with his audience or not about what/whom that is.
the last verse is definitely a Biblical reference.
"so i'll open the door and let you in" this refers to the Bible verse where Jesus says I am knocking at your door, will you let me in, essentially will you accept me as savior?
"i want to break the alabaster, smell the sweet perfume" refers to the woman, i believe mary magdalene who broke open an alabaster jar of perfume and spread it over Jesus's head, to annoint Him.
the next line, "when the bottle is broken . . . i'll have everything worth having. . ." this means that we are to give God are best, and after we do that we will have nothing left to give, but we will literrally have everything and anything worth having, meaning salvation.
he's awesome, and this is an awesome song, one of my favorites aside from prison is private property.
also, he's from texas, so it wouldn't surprize me if he is christian or somewhat spiritual, regardless if he goes to church, he did live in the bible belt.
this is definitely my favorite rocky votolato song.. it's unbelievable.
So I saw him last night and it was amazing. But, anyways he said this song was about a man on a "spiritual journey." its just amazing!
