Being myself a non-believer, I can understand what the song means. Matthew Bellamy is also an atheist. I believe he just wrote what he thinks about the moment we die. In our opinion, there's no life or paradise or hell or anything after death, so Matthew wonders, while he is dying, if it is really as he thinks. Well, it is just a song about fears that sometimes, or often, catch us non-believers.

In an interview with a Rock Music channel in France (2006), Bellamy states, "I believe in the God of the universe, definitely." In addition, he revealed in a 2007 video inverview that, "I don't believe in heaven or hell, I don't really believe in that version" [watch]. Bellamy's beliefs are therefore probably closer to the philosophical concept of "The Absolute" as opposed to the structures of organized religions.

Being an agnostic atheist myself, I can really relate to this song.

Atheists don't believe in God or the afterlife. We believe that when you die, you die for good. You cease to exist. Evanescence. Everything you ever were, everyone you loved, every moment of your life all doesn't matter anymore. You're gone forever, just gone and nothing more.

The erie whispers are pessimistic worries and thoughts. "You" is referring to the whispers. They're keeping him up with the memories of all that he is (was) and how that will be no more.

He's clinging onto the hope that maybe, just maybe, there is something more. He's deluding himself into thinking he's hearing ghosts and spirits, probably of a dead loved one. Also, the atheist is coming close to death, so maybe he's fading in and out, he's passing between the bridge of life and death ("where out worlds collide") and he thinks he's hearing the dead, like he's on the brink of dying.

There's nothing he can do to stop death. He knows it's hopeless. Looking through a faithless eye is having a non-religious perspective. He's saying, "What if there is no Heaven or Hell or reincarnation? What if we simply disappear?"
I love this song so much. It describes my thoughts on death perfectly, and I too have been up at night hearing the "erie whispers."
Yup, I agree with you. But what if there is a Hell? Then we burn forever while maggots crawl in our skin. And that would happen to atheists if God really exists. And I think He does. Even though I wish he didn't, so that way there's a guarantee that I won't go anywhere because there won't be an afterlife. Maybe you might call that being selfish because then you'd be I'd Heaven for the good guys if my wish comes true. And the sad part is if God doesn't exist, and we just disappear when we die, life has...

It makes no difference whether you existed or not. Because when the people who love you die too, who cares who you are? It's not as if everyone in the world's gonna be great and famous someday.

To me it sounds like(not making an accusation just piecing together the pieces I have) that you were a believer but had a bad experience that made you hate and not want to believe in God. Let me tell you, bad experiences aren't Gods fault, it's Satan's. He wants you to turn away from God and he will do whatever he can to make it happen. Also if you believe He is real and are scared of Hell, why not want to believe? If God is real(which he is) then everyone that doesn't believe...

So either way believers will be fine, non-believers however may not be.

Without religion, you only have randomness creating the universe. Randomness has not concience, no meaning, no purpose. These three things are required in order to create reason. To create purpose.

With that said, I find the odds too close to impossible for randomness to have created the systems on earth. Such things HAD to have been made through conscience. Through randomness, the ecosystem to support three forms of life(aquatic, plant, oxygen breathing creatures). We have a sun that is created to give life as well, did randomness happen to predict the perfect location to place the sun? Or to have the planets rotate to keep a perfect environment of hot and cold. Or a moon and stars so that we aren't completely blind at night?
Furthermore, religion gives people a permanent purpose. While atheism is a temporary purpose. And that is why this atheist if freaking out at his death bed... After his life is over, he has nothing.

@bmx3r101 Yes FistMountain is correct. If you are atheist(praying for you) then it makes complete sense why you would get the hell scared out of you about dying, to you that's just it. However it's not, I can't control what you believe but the only person I want to see stay in Hell for all of eternity is Lucifer himself, and all his devils. Now I know not every person in the world will be saved but it is the mission of Christians to disciple as many people as we can and lead people to The Lord God....

I did not read through most of the posts, but judging by the majority of ignorant analysis of this song, it seems many of you tools haven't read the lyrics either. It would be very nice to say "the title of the song says it all" and wrap it up in a neat and tidy box, but that just isn't the case, after all if it were, the song itself wouldn't make any sense.
The song seems to be about a person who is witnessing the death of someone he is close to. This person was obviously an Atheist (or to most of you ignorant christians, anything other than your exact belief may as well be Atheism, Satanism, or Paganism, whatever the flavor of the day is), and the beliefs of this person clashes with the person that is dying. Note how the lyrics mention "your memories keep me awake" and "are you afraid to die?" (I think Matt also throws in a quick "because it" right in front of the following chorus, it's been a while since I've actually listened to the song, I could be wrong.) Verse one illustrates that the living person is having trouble coping with the thought that there is someone who does not believe. The second verse goes into those differences, "floating in between where our worlds collide," the worlds being the different beliefs, and floating in between could mean the living person is pleading with the dying to decide between the two. The third verse definitely sounds like someone is trying to convince someone else. It seems like the song isn't the actual thoughts of a dying Atheist, but a religious person that doesn't get it. Those are my thoughts on the song, I could very well be wrong, but there is for sure more to this than just "OMGSZ teh titel somes it op."
@jneumann1 Dude I never would've thought of it that way. There is one thing I'm not fully understanding from your analysis, is it the believer or the Atheist that's dying? Because both would make sense, if it was the Atheist then the believer would be scared that they will never see them again.

I think eggorox is pretty close, though interpretations are subjective. It's most certainly a concept album about the end of the world, however the world is never defined. Maybe it's the earth, maybe it's a really fucked up relationship, maybe it's the loss of someone near to you, maybe it's an addiction consuming your life, maybe it's about war, etc... Any of those things can make life as you know it cease to be and make you feel that everything is ending. Just food for thought.
I came to this conclusion after trying(and failing) and trying(and failing) again to end a destructive relationship. However I'll never say with any certainty that's what the album is about as it's highly subjective.
As an aside, don't forget Fury. When you tack that onto the tracklist as the closing track rather than Ruled by Secrecy, the album gets really depressing, because it essentially leaves you knowing that whatever is causing your apocalypse will win in the end.
I think this song is about falling in love with a spider monkey and not being able to tell him how you feel.
That, or its about being at the dentist, getting a root canal. The singer is on Nitrous Oxide and Vicodin and sees God while fucked up, having his teeth drilled, and hes scared that theyre working on the wrong tooth.
Thats my 2 cents.
