Up Above The Sea Lyrics

the sun came up
up above the sea
the streaming clouds
tore into my tranquility

out my window
I could see
a bird drop down
on the branches of my apple tree

everyday the bluebird comes down
and stares at me for hours
cant figure out if he brings me luck
or if hes trying to tear me down

I bought a rifle
with a bushnell scope
knowing the answer would be
to see if hes calm or frightful

the sun rose up
over the sea
I staked out and waited
like so many gunmen before me

everyday the bluebird comes down
and stares at me for hours
cant figure out if he brings me luck
or if hes trying to tear me down

he saw my gun, he stared
right into my eyes, I fired
his body exploded
and feathers fell all over my lawn

It's a very disturbing song the first time you hear it after reading all of the lyrics. But I am absolutely positive that the bluebird symbolizes either other people close to John or possibly an especially haunting memory/reputation. He no doubt finds the "bird" annoying and destroys it to free himself from whatever the bird symbolizes.

it's based on the poem "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner" by coleridge...

so yes, he destroys it to free himself.

does mr. vanderslice usually base his poems on ideas found in poetry? cause if he did then he would be the perfect artists for the art/english major in us all

perhaps i am confused but i thought that by killing the albatross the ancient mariner condemned himself to tell his tale to relieve himself of agony, not to bring himself freedom. and aren't albatrosses usually white or brown, not blue? i get the bird reference but it still seems off
