The album contains the dynamics of a 12 step program. In the 8th step of the 12 step program you are supposed to create a list of all the people you have hurt while being under the grips of a addiction Also relating to the song gravity, the 12th step is having a spiritual awakening and realising you will never be totally perfect. Never totally free of behavorial patterns and adiction.

Thats a good idea, though Maynard said in the vh1 interview that he doesent draw upon the bible for his songs anymore.

No clue about what the 'real' meaning might be, but whenever I hear this song, I imagine some one who's just sick of life and suicidal. They're counting to ten before they do it (most likely with a gun), but hesitate on nine, since they're starting to wonder if it's really such a good idea. They hesitate on ten as well, unable to go through with it. Does anyone know what they're saying in the background? Especially towards the end...

I know what was meant by this song. It's biblical. Maynard was basically counting all the crimes that could be committed by man, passed down by god himself. The 10 Commandments. It just goes to show you how far humanity has grown accustomed to the ancient rules, which still exist in some form in society today, but are still being committed.

This. But ... I can also see it as him just simply counting a list of personal crimes he commited but he would much rather just keep what they are from us.

I like the suicide theory by ObsessiveTendencies. He counts to ten and hesitates. The background dialogue and laughing that follows could be his life flashing before his eyes before the end.

this song gives me a paronoid feeling and from the start i always find myself waiting for the background laugh in the very end.

this song lulls me to sleep. i feel like i'm in some kind of a hypnotized state. i wish the song was longer because i'll be sitting up with my eyes closed, almost sleeping and the song will end.

I agree with tottaly Blue on this one. The 12-step program is one of the main metaphors in the album. Also if you listen carefully to the background noise, you can hear someone say "Maynard" and someone else say "Jordy," both members of the band. So they probably just recorded random voice bits during the album sessions and put them in the song.

Actually, along with "The Package", "Crimes" was written by the bassist Jeordie White. (http://www.aperfectcircle.org/articles/_deeper/a%20perfect%20circle/2003/2003_nov_apc_uwire.htm)

i think its about a guy who has commited alot of crimes over the years. he is counting them in his head and he loses count. he thinks the list is small, but as he is counting, he gets stuck on how many he has actually commited. goes along with the 12 step program concept
