Dancefloors Lyrics
daybreak, nightfall
long as i believe
there ain't nothing glowin'
like the skin you're showin'
and the keys you gave to me
nightjails, poolhalls
some things are everywhere
so for the past i'm diggin'
a grave so big
it will swallow up the sea
oh, i know...
that it's easy...
there's no trouble waitin' for me
dancefloors, headlights
in my blood, there's gasoline
for an urban boy
on a dirty tour
i never felt so clean
loaded questions
in an automatic world
you just won't be seein'
the things you need
as if you thought you would
oh, i know...
it's never easy...
when there's trouble waitin' for me
long as i believe
there ain't nothing glowin'
like the skin you're showin'
and the keys you gave to me
nightjails, poolhalls
some things are everywhere
so for the past i'm diggin'
a grave so big
it will swallow up the sea
that it's easy...
there's no trouble waitin' for me
in my blood, there's gasoline
for an urban boy
on a dirty tour
i never felt so clean
loaded questions
in an automatic world
you just won't be seein'
the things you need
as if you thought you would
it's never easy...
when there's trouble waitin' for me

beautiful music.
I love when my morning jacket plays in this style. The band is so stylistically versatile, and Z is a great mixed bag of treats. This song represents an almost classic country style... but the album goes from raggae to electronic to blues and on and on... just great stuff.
This songs It Still Moves, not Z.

I think this song is about his life on the road. He looks out and notices that jails and poolhalls are everywhere he goes ("some things are everyehere").
My Morning Jacket does have a very versatile sound, this song is so '80s southern rock. I think Scotty has it right (life on the road), I just wonder about the last few lines, from 'loaded questions' on.
On a side note...I've noticed similar things in my own limited travels where I live (WV), every town you visit you see nothing but churches, pawn shops and dive bars. I find it ammusing that they're all oriented towards alleviating people's troubles and that for most, they're visited in a cycle. You blow your money getting loaded, pawn your stuff for money and eventually hit rock bottom, then you end up in church. haha
This song is about how someone is feeling perhaps beginning off a tour, 'as long as i believe (in love) like this skin you're showin' and the keys you gave to me' (to their tour car) (keys to aspects of life)
I relate to this song beacuse I too am a gambler, and I know what it's like to look at the world and breathe in easy the gasoline into my blood and only feel comfort in the eyes of all night jails or casinos. "Nightjails...poolhalls Some things are everywhere So for the past I'm diggin a grave so big, It will swallow up the sea" Perhaps he wants to drown out the (not so gutsy) past in a new feeling, in a big grave.
the last stanza about seeing things in life you thought you would, is about how the world is really quite hard and after a while of being a gambler you realize you can't live off of your good vibes and good luck. you need reality and common sense as well.
"Oh I know...it's never easy When there's trouble waitin' for me" Someone's out to get him
