World Inside The World Lyrics

There is a world inside the world that you see
And it's okay to count the minutes
'Cause how many could there be?
And if love is all around us
Then how could this have found us?
The move you know is don't let go of me

There is a world inside the world that you see

Let's call her Halcyon and hope that she holds
'Cause every shore she's gonna touch is gonna turn to solid gold
She and I've been wishing
For a change in our condition
It's not given, but it's obvious to me

There is a world inside the world
There is a world inside the world
There is a world inside the world that you see

There is a world inside the world that you see
I read it in Delillo like they'd written it to me
And if love is all we're made of
Then what am I afraid of?
Just 'cause freedom rings, it doesn't mean we're free

There is a world inside the world
There is a world inside the world
There is a world inside the world
There is a world inside the world
There is a world inside the world that you see

I love this song so much. I heard it was about September 11th, does anyone know if that is true?

This song was inspired by the Don Delillo novel Underworld ("I read it in Delillo like they'd written it to me") which is about the various underworlds that crosscut the 'mainstream' world ("There is a world inside the world that you see"), and how all these underworlds create the world we live in. I can see the connection to Sept. 11th ("If love is all around us, then how could this have found us?") but that also can be read as commentary on some of the characters in Underworld. This song is why I bought Underworld, and it took a while but I finally read it. It's a fantastic book.

Actually it's probably also inspired by Libra, if not moreso than Underworld. The quote "there is a world inside the world" was taken off page 13 of DeLillo's Libra. I'm reading it now at my kitchen table and just realized Rhett didn't write that line himself. Womp womp.
