That Sad And Holy Glow Lyrics
I saw it in the eyes of the checkout girl -
that sad and holy glow every blue-collar knows,
like the lit windows on my childhood street
where the deep, dark secrets of the family are kept.
Beneath the mire and stench of growing debt,
the deep, dark secrets of the family are kept.
Credit is a whore who won't wake up and leave,
but believe me I'm not sleeping with her anymore.
I don't want to be a slave, I just want to be free
and honestly I'm sick and tired of people chasing me.

like the lit windows on my childhood street
where the deep, dark secrets of the family are kept.

hmmm. im not judging these quys, but to my knowledge they are a 'Christian band'. in that case im kind of wondering why they use the whole 'credit is a whore who won't wake up and leave' analogy. fine, it is only a analogy, but is it appropriate to say that coming from a Christian perspective?? isn't the bible against prostitution - and doesn't that principle include the use of it in song lyrics? would welcome peoples thoughts...
Of course the Bible is against prostitution. But I like the lyrics to this song because they're honest. I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say. He compares credit to a prostitute which makes both being in debt and prostitutes look rough. So what's the problem? Just looks like a good honest lyric to me.
I say, "whore" is just a word, there's nothing wrong with saying a word. Certainly, nobody is promoting prostitution, especially if you listen to the context Mr. Staples is using the analogy in. Also, John, is it appropriate that God told Hosea, a godly man, to marry Gomer, a prostitute ??
It's interesting, I hear is a song about credit, and it's such a simple subject but it's sung so awesomely with such well-written lyrics. Definately one of my favorites, though I love all my babies...
"credit is a whore who won't wake up and leave" -- represents the instant gratification of using credit, but after the fact you've just been digging yourself deeper -- "i don't want to be a slave, I just wanna be free", you're still trapped by the credit. After you've gotten your gratification, the debt is still there, it hasn't woken up and left. "i'm tired of people chasing me" -- people chasing him to get the money the singer owes them. Of course credit could just be a metaphor for something else with similar characteristics, like sin perhaps.
