So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

hmm i can totally relates to this song. see how nowadays it looks like everyone have an exciting live, going out, and doing something every day of their life. next to them, you feel like you are boring. they sometimes put a "certain pressure" on you, because you don't do much as them. like, if they are asking you what you are doing tonight, you would be like "not much.. staying home relaxing" they will then reply with "staying home on friday?? blah blah". as for me this song is made in a sarcastic ways to answer to those people.

for me this means: "oh yeah! you are right, i got to be so cool like you, see now i'm so cool, i got so much things to do, such as finding how boring i am", i think those followed lines are pretty simple, in a certain way it means: i don't care how much i can appear to you, i am what i am.

i think those lines are pretty clear. it just means don't over think. sometimes when something happens to you, you keep thinking about it and create more problems than there was at first. people often tell me that i think way too much about everything, i'm getting paranoid and stuff because i see issues in everything. his new golden rule is "numb is the new deep"

but "numb is the new deep" isn't really his "new golden rule", its just a sarcastic way to explain how he thinks from now on. those 3 lines means in a certain way "okay im gonna change myself now, ill be what you guys want me to be! im no more what i used to be! (done with the old me)", but in reality, all of this is pretty sarcastic which brings to this real meaning: "im not going to change myself for you. i am what i am" and that is his new golden rule
but that is my perspective of this song, and its good that everyone has their own opinions
