the acoustic version is 10x better...the song still remains amazing
it sounds like it's a break up .. but i dont' think it's between him and a girl .. it sounds like it's between his parents .. like his mom or dad walked out on them .. that's just what i got out of it

This song is so amazing. I can truly say I'm almost in love with it. I think he's talking about giving up in general in the chorus... but like you said, maybe a divorce between his family. He feels like he doesn't know why people have to give up on everything and not work at it and try.
Its about a him and his girlfriend breaking up and her pretending to not recognise him and leaving him in the past, but beneath all of that he still remembers her as who she used to be, but he's about to give up on getting the relationship to work but he's questioning his actions because he can see how good things used to be between them, he hopes she will learn from this mistake and come back.
