Explain It To Me Lyrics
Head underwater
Keeps getting hotter
Give 'em your medicine
Fame injection
Tell them to jump higher
Tell 'em to run farther
Make 'em measure up
Decades longer than you
Piece it together
It's like weather
Watch him travel
Kiss the gravel
Tell him to jump higher
Tell him to run farther
Make him measure up
Ten times longer than you
Ever should, you never could
Explain them to me, explain them to me
Keeps getting hotter
Give 'em your medicine
Fame injection
Tell them to jump higher
Tell 'em to run farther
Make 'em measure up
Decades longer than you
It's like weather
Watch him travel
Kiss the gravel
Tell him to jump higher
Tell him to run farther
Make him measure up
Ten times longer than you
Ever should, you never could
Explain them to me, explain them to me

this song comes off a bit sad to me, but always cheers me up. i heard it on the movie "Thirteen" & downloaded it after. listen to it alot still, & haven't gotten sick of it. yaa Liz!
I heard it on Thirteen too!! Love that movie! But i do love this song but I have to admit I'm not a Liz Phair fan. I was really surprised when I found out she sang it but it gives me energy when I hear it.
I also heard this on Thirteen (the BEST movie of all time) I thought it said cat underwater the first time I heard it :p. But I decided to look it up because I heard it on the comentary to. The song to me reminds me of how I feel with my mom like I have no space and I just want to escape. But thats just me!
mmm. drugs. experimentation. FAMOUS PEOPLE
I heard it on the movie "Thirteen" too. It gives me like that feeling that that girl , Tracy ,had. I just want to fly away.It is indeed a sad song, but it gives me goosebumps!
its like how someone would constantly get told to do something that they should never have to do by someone who is so insecure that they feel like they have to constantly pressure others and put them down in order to feel as though they have control. And in the end these people who hurt others tend to never explain their actions. incredible song, its insane how she can create these incredible stories and points of view from simple short poems. thats talent
I think this is about how said it is how people put celebrities on pedestals, watching their every move, idolising them. It asks the question of why people do this, what the point is. The whole thing just gives you a sense that Phair hates all that and finds the behaviour sad.
Along the lines of gerbileater's post, it's about how contrived and strange all the macho patriarchal systems of the world are and how people get pushed into them for one reason or another. She specifically mentions sports and religion in particular ("kiss the gravel"=every time the pope visits a different country he will kiss the ground to bless it)
this song is just amazing, it gives me such a trance like euphoric feeling, i love it.
i kind of get the vibe it's sort of about those people you idolize, whoever they may be, that don't really deserve being looked up to. they themselves are kind of flakes and haven't really tried very hard to get where they are, but they expect tons out of you and you just keep giving until eventually you realize this person you so look up to can't even explain important questions about life to you.
