Soap Star Joe Lyrics

He's just a hero
In a long line of heroes
Looking for something attractive to save
They say he rode in
On the back of a pickup
And he won't leave town
'til you remember his name

He's just a hero
In a long line of heroes
Looking for some lonely billboard to grace
They say he sprung from the skull of Athena
Think about your own head
And the headache he gave

He's just a hero
In a long line of heroes
Looking for action at a price he can pay
They say he's famous
But no one can prove it
Make him an offer just to see what he'll say

Check out the dashboard lights
Glowing all green and white
He feels safe in the dark
He wears his bluejeans tight

He's just a hero
In a long line of heroes
Looking for something attractive to save
They say he rode in
On the back of a pickup
And he won't leave town
'Til you remember his name

Check out the thinning hair
Check out the aftershave
Check out America
You're looking at it babe

I can't believe more people haven't commented on Liz's songs...this album ("Exile in Guyville") is great. Anyway, there's a reference to Greek mythology in this song, which many of you probably knew. The lines about the subject of this song springing from the head of Athena is a play on the story of Athena's birth. The goddess of war and wisdom, she sprung from her father Zeus's head.

This is about the "male ego" and the title character's need to be a hero, to save someone attractive to prove his worth, but who is really just sort of pathetic and gives everyone headaches.

"They say he's famous But no one can prove it" I love that line. I think it totally sums up plenty of stars we have now, who are famous for being famous. The last line, "check out America" also seems to be referencing this need to be famous and a "hero" for nothing at all.

To me, it's Liz critisizing the way America feels men should act. She's saying most american males feel like they have to save a woman, as if women couldn't save themselves. Liz is just showing how pathetic men who go around looking for something to save are.

Liz pokes fun at the guys who think they are "all that", but also satirizes women for going after him She says, "Make him an offer just to see what he'll say." This is a little strange, seeing as Liz criticizes him to no end. Still, there IS something irresistible about the man who rode in on a pick-up and symbolizes America.
