Never Said

This reminds me of relationships I've had where we needed to keep it a secret. Like dating coworkers or a friend's ex.

But it eventually gets out and everybody knows, and he's accusing you of telling everyone. When in fact, you never said a damn thing.

I've always thought of this song as a girl denying being promiscuous. I can see pepper's view as well. To me, Liz is responding to someone telling her they heard she did something with a guy. I also always thought the "I ain't done anything wrong" line said "I'd hate to let it turn you on."

It also gives off the feeling of "it's offensive to think that someone would think I'd blab about it when they should know damn well I don't blab about stuff."

the part about "don't look at my sideways" is so great, I get this image of someone acting really skeptical and stupid towards her when she's trying to let him know she hasn't done anything.

i agree with aemitt, the thing she 'never said nothing' to was her and this mans relasionship becoming exclusive

This may sound weird, but I always thought this song was about rape, or date rape. "I didn't utter a sound." I don't know, it always came off to me that someone took advantage of her, but like a lot of women, there's pressure to keep it quiet, but for some reason or another, people have been talking about it.

"All I know is I'm clean as a whistle" sounds like a denial of a rumor or slander that she has a sexually transmissible / transmitted disease. "I never said nothing"--about a sexual liaison. Presumably someone told him something like, 'Why are you messing with that whore, you'll catch a disease from her.' (Cf. "Surrender" by Cheap Trick.)
