Closer Lyrics
It was the rocks you liked
So much you'd throw them
Down into the river's darkness
Down from where the trains go flying
Your legs hung out
Into the air - we'll keep on kicking
We're moving but it's never going
When we go it's like we're faking
Two palms, no sound
Closer and closer
The beam's width that's between us
Gets just a little leaner
We ought to fail to see it
And if I go to the left
And if you move to the right
So that we've hit and spilled
We've turned it off in the night
Between the banks that roll
The glass hidden motion
Above we go on without knowing
The pines control the wild sarcasm
To hold us up
And time was held
Well worth the holding
Waste when you try to save
Save it and it ends up wasted
You know these words
Answer we entered
The trains won't ride beside us
But water moves beneath us
And takes away the sense
Of hearing it all
So much you'd throw them
Down into the river's darkness
Down from where the trains go flying
Your legs hung out
We're moving but it's never going
When we go it's like we're faking
Two palms, no sound
The beam's width that's between us
Gets just a little leaner
We ought to fail to see it
And if you move to the right
So that we've hit and spilled
We've turned it off in the night
The glass hidden motion
Above we go on without knowing
The pines control the wild sarcasm
To hold us up
Well worth the holding
Waste when you try to save
Save it and it ends up wasted
You know these words
The trains won't ride beside us
But water moves beneath us
And takes away the sense
Of hearing it all

My favorite MPPA song. I picture being out on a river with a train track alongside it, on the banks, at night, perhaps with a flashlight, in the summer heat, swimming, or drifting in an innertube...reminds me of when I was young, in college, before having to get a job and be responsible, and life was about just having fun, no responsibilities. This is my favorite band and great live, don't miss them.
it could be a love song where all the meaning is implied and not direct. i like it for that. i think you can be hanging out with someone you really care about and are a bit confused if it's actually going to work out or whatever.
This song just reminds me of those peaceful moments you have just enjoying being with someone
It's the perfect seasonal creek song, with just two people. It's got a great beat and a great feel. I love all of the lyrics in this.
i first heard this song a few years ago when i received a free music sampler from polyvinyl records and it stil has the highest throne in my hear! matt pond, yo yo! you are a treat!
i live in a town by a river, and my friends and i found this secluded little spot, in the woods between the river and the train tracks. and i just sit there by myself and listen to this song, skipping rocks, as the train goes by. it's lovely.
I love the line about holding time, "waste when you try to save it, save it and it ends up wasted." So true. You try to save time, and it's so easy to think, "hey, I've just saved myself an hour" or whatever, and then just blow it.
I once had a spot like this, by the train tracks and the water, that was right behind my special someones house, and we would spend all our time there. I miss those days :(

What a wonderful chorus. "We ought to fail to see it" is so cute.
