It's clearly about parents who are judgmental shitbags that lord over their offspring. I can relate. It doesn't take too much effort, mentally, to apply it to former friends or lovers or acquaintances of all types, but it is natively about parents.
To me it sounds like Mark is singing about his parents? Maybe they tried to control him and don't like teh life he's chosen for himself. And while it pains him to separate himself from them, it is his life, and he's living his dream.
I guess it could be a letter to anyone saying "I loved you but you tried to control me. No we're estranged. Sometimes I still feel bad about it (the estrangement) But I'm better off without you.
