Hearts Of Oak Lyrics
I was walking along some downtown avenue
I was whistling a new song to myself
And it went, it went something like this one
But I just couldn't get it to end
But I was talking about this song to this friend of mine
And she sang me a new song of her own
She said, she said the cards were still stacked against her
But she said she could still do it alone
And I saw for all of us, she spoke:
"Won't you stand up for the Hearts of Oak?"
So I was listening to this song by this friend of mine.
I was hearing what she said, I was feeling her rage.
She said, “No weak, no weak heart shall prosper!"
She said, "Nothing's wrong, and I belong on this stage."
And I was for all of us, she spoke:
"Won't you stand up for the Hearts of Oak?"
And I saw her stand - she couldn't be broken.
And I saw her show, her heart of oak again and again and again and again
If you think, if you think, everything is cool (Yeah, yeah)
can't you hear, can't you hear what the girl goes through? (Yeah, yeah)
Can you tell, can you tell me that it's not true? (No, no)
Can you find, can you find hearts of oak in you?
When the night, it ends, and you've awoken
Won't you stand up with your heart of oak again?
Like the girl withstands - she can't be broken
Won't you stand up for your Hearts of Oak again and again and again and again
I was walking along some downtown avenue
I was sharing the sidewalk with my friend
We were singing this song together, and it sounded so good
We said, we said, "Let's sing it again!" (and it had no end)

I was told this song was, more or less, about females in rock bands, and the difficulty of being female in a mostly male industry.
"So I was listening to this song by this friend of mine. I was hearing what she said, I was feeling her rage. She said, “No weak, no weak heart shall prosper!" She said, "Nothing's wrong, and I belong on this stage." "
Considering Ted is married to one of the members of The Secret Stars, this all fits together pretty well. I think she even does back-up vocals on the song, as well as a few others. See if you can notice her!
So good. So god damn good.
I concur...
yeahhh good point, this is prob the best song ever.
yes this song is amazing but does anyone know what it's about?
not positive, but just the phrase "hearts of oak" (with oak being a real hard, solid wood), makes me think its about someone being able to deal with getting the "shaft" in relationships alot.
Ever read Questionable Content? This song makes me think of Marten (main character). Poor guy has no luck, but he's battle hardened.
Also: she can't be broken sort of lends itself to me thinking this.
shrug
I do read Questionable Content.
I agree with tgkeke, but i also agree with ghandiroot.
Love this song!!!
the hearts of oak are a soccer team from ghana
I very much agree with tgkeke. This song gives me goosebumps each time I listen. Awesome. Ted Leo forever!
Ted, being the soccer nut he is, wouldn't surprise me by alluding to the team as well as using the phrase as a metaphor describing strong will.
