Vittorio E. Lyrics
Took a river and it wouldn’t let go
I want you to stay and i want you to go
I took a river and the river was long and it goes on
I want to be there tonight
I want to get there but it’s just out of sight
I took a river and felt so slight so hold on
So hold on
and hold on
It goes on
I took a river and the river was long
I want you to stay course I want you to go
I took a river and the river was long and goes on
It goes on
Ooh it goes on
It goes on
I want you to stay and i want you to go
I took a river and the river was long and it goes on
I want to be there tonight
I want to get there but it’s just out of sight
I took a river and felt so slight so hold on
So hold on
and hold on
It goes on
I took a river and the river was long
I want you to stay course I want you to go
I took a river and the river was long and goes on
It goes on
Ooh it goes on
It goes on

I think this song is about how in life we're always moving forwards whether we want to or not. In this the speaker is talking about a girl who for one reason or another has to leave him. "I want you to stay, and I want you to go" He needs her but supports her doing whatever it is which is causing her to leave.
After she's gone he wants to be with her. "I want to be there tonight I want to get there but it’s just out of sight"
And generally life just keeps flowing, so you need to go along with it. "So hold on and hold on, it goes on"
Really love this song.
This is a great song with some pretty weird lyrics. "Took a river and it wouldn't let go". And im not really sure what the river is about, but the song is obviously about some relationship coming to some fork in the road or river..
Just an interesting fact - the name was taken from a subway stop in Rome. Vitorrio Emanuel was the first leader of a united Italy in the late 1800's.
this song was perfect in Stranger Than Fiction. Spoon's music went so well with the movie.
totally agreed, sub it made the movie just that much better of course, wreckless eric helped too
...I don't even remember hearing this in Stranger Than Fiction. But anyways, this has always been one of my favorite Spoon songs. Nice and simple. And the "oooohs" and "aaaaaahs" in the background are oh. so. wonderful.
