Back to the Life Lyrics
Son you must go back to the life
Go pack your bags
Take up your scythe
Cause this world wasnt meant for us both
Who made the night
Who made the day
Who gave you life
Who gave you say
I said this world wasnt meant for us both
Who rules the day
Who rules the night
Go pack your bags
Take up your scythe
I said this world wasnt meant for us both
Go pack your bags
Take up your scythe
Cause this world wasnt meant for us both
Who made the night
Who made the day
Who gave you life
Who gave you say
I said this world wasnt meant for us both
Who rules the day
Who rules the night
Go pack your bags
Take up your scythe
I said this world wasnt meant for us both

The beginning of this song is great, with them laughing and everything. The story kinda reminds me of a Western shoot out thing...this town isnt big enough for the two of us. But its prolly about somebody trying to steal his girl
I kind of thought of it as a father and son relationship. The dad is basically kicking the son out of his house. Hence the line, "who gave you life."
I think it's about God and Satan. The only part that doesn't make sense is the word "Son", unless you take it so that Satan was God's righthand man, and almost like a son... (pre-Christ) The rest makes a lot of sense though.
"You must go back to the life" Satan was banished from Heaven and back to the "life" or the Earth, where humans are, Satan's domain. "Go back your bag" Again, God banished Satan from Heaven "Take up your scyhte" A Grim Reaper reference. Satan and the Grim Reaper are similar religious/mythologic beings. "Cause this world wasn't meant for us both" Again with the banishing from Heaven. Satan betrayed God and now God doesn't want him in His domain.
"WHO MADE THE NIGHT WHO MADE THE DAY WHO GAVE YOU LIFE WHO GAVE YOU SAY" All references to God. God made the day, night, life, and granted us freewill.
"WHO RULES THE DAY WHO RULES THE NIGHT" Satan is said to be the ruler of Earth where he will stay until judgement day and be throw into the Lake of Fire.. etc etc...
Does that make any sense at all? Or am I pulling this all out of my ass?
It kinda makes sense. It could either be about father/son or God/Satan. The father analogy is used over and over in the Bible, so that makes it more difficult.
Does this remind anyone else of Led Zeppelin IV, and The Battle of Evermore in particular? Or am I slow.
I think it probably is about a father/son... but, I kinda like it as a God/man sorta deal. "who gave you say" indeed.
Go BACK to the life, though?
That part makes me think we still haven't gotten it figured out right. The son/satan/man wouldn't be going back to the life in any of our interpretations - unless I'm missing something
Satan is also the son of god, the spurned earlier-born (sort of like Ishmael in the Hebrew Bible). I'm no satanist or anything, this is all mythological symbolism; see Carl Jung's Answer to Job re how Satan is God's "shadow" son.
"who made the night, who made the day," may also be reference to book of Job, come to think of it.
I am surprised no one has commented on "scythe" yet. It's the reaping instrument that is used in harvesting. Possibly a reference toward a grim reaper / satan like character. "Who made the night, who made the day" - God. Seems to me the song has more reference to a Biblical relationship than an earthly father/son relationship.
SpoonIsRock commented on that earlier.
