All the Pretty Girls Go to the City Lyrics
All the pretty girls go to the city
Dont they dont they do my love
Oh its something to see theyre so pretty
High heel shoes low neck sweaters acting so tough
Hear em go do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
And they know that theyll make it alright
I say dont they now dont they now dont they my love
Dont they now dont they now dont they my love
Jacqueline and Beth went to the city now
Left home soon as they were old enough
Cause all the pretty girls go to the city now
Dont they dont they do dont they do that my love
And they go do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
I said dont they now dont they now dont they my love
Dont they now dont they now dont they my love
Dont they dont they do my love
Oh its something to see theyre so pretty
High heel shoes low neck sweaters acting so tough
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Dont they now dont they now dont they my love
Left home soon as they were old enough
Cause all the pretty girls go to the city now
Dont they dont they do dont they do that my love
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Do d-do d-do
Dont they now dont they now dont they my love

its about watching a group of young girls make mistakes. hes talking to his friend of some sort and they are just looking at girls all dolled up who have no idea of what the world is like.
I think your angle in regards to this song's lyrical context is pretty on. The line, "Hear em go do d-do d-do" implies they're simply putting on a front when in reality they fear what they don't know.

don't want to go, ya know, venturin' out on a limb or anything here, but, i'd say that it's possible that this song is commenting on society's obsession with looks, and how certain looking people have better chances of doing certain things, and how this closes off their opportunities, and everyone else's.
im serious...how come no one knows about this band. Theyre incredible!!!!!!!!!
i noticed recently that this song is very similar to the Beatles' "Get Back". It has kinda the same idea and even some of the lyrics are the same...."High heel shoes low neck sweaters" i dont think this is a coincidence cause Spoon seems to have been influenced by the Beatles in many ways.
You sure?
i agree with themachine, this band is awesome!!! they have such a great sound, catchy beats and i love the lead singer's voice. it's so sexy and raw.
avs2006 is right, definitely about hooking. the song is a really cool way of commenting on that sorry way of life. this band rocks. best out there making music today.
I don't think it's about hookers since there's nothing leading me to that think the pretty girls are hos more than secretaries or scientists. That was a good catch with the High Heeled Shoes and Low Neck Sweaters, machine. Never had thought about that.
That wasn't very nice, avs2006.
Why is it I can see jxnarcoticz putting on a sad puppy face. (No offense meant, I think LoserNo1's comment was out of line).
I doubt this prostitute idea. It seems more likely that the meaning is deeper and falls more into the idea that 'AS THEY WERE OLD ENOUGH' girls all tend to want to go to the city and try and live this glamorous life while they act all tough.
