My Slumbering Heart Lyrics

In my dreams, I see myself hitting a baseball
In a green field somewhere near a freeway
I'm all tan and smiling and running from 3rd base
And it's hot and
The kids keep playing on the driving game
And they're singing the same goddamn refrain
And the sky is a bluish grey

And it's become just like a chemical stress
Tracing the lines in my face for
Something more beautiful than is there
I've barely been gone

In my dreams, I see you at the foot of some mountains
And we're taking some pictures or something
And we'd better hurry up
And it's late and
The sun keeps on shooting through pine trees
And the grass stains are wet on your new jeans
And we'd better hurry up

And I've become just like a terrible mess
Searching the lines in my face for
Something more beautiful than is there
The crowds keep me coming back
Cheering

In my dreams, I see you asleep on a twin bed
The covers pulled up over your head
And I asleep or awake?
And it's morning and the captain is playing the radio
And he's just put the paint on his new boat
Am I asleep or awake?

And it just feels good when you're waking up
And it just feels good when you're next to me
And it just feels good when you're coming home
And it just feels good when it's waking up
(My slumbering heart)

And I've become just like a chemical stress
Tracing the lines of my face for
Something more beautiful than is there
I've barely been gone

And I'm not a failure, I swear
I wish you could see it from over there
I've got a lot over here without you
I've barely been gone
Gone, dreaming

this is one of those songs that just makes me incredibly happy no matter what mood i'm in. i think the lyrics are actually "and i've become just like a chemical STRESS" not strice, in the first and last chorus.

Actually, I don't think this song has a happy meaning. I think it's about the narrator missing an ex-boyfriend. For example, "we'd better hurry up," is because she knows what's coming for them (a break-up) and she's remembering back to happier times. In the "it just feels good..." part, she's remembering how it felt when they were together (for example, how it felt to wake up next to him).

"And I'm not a failure, I swear/I wish you could see it from over there/I've got a lot over here without you"

It seems, especially because of the ending, that the song is about her relationship with her mother. She starts off with a memory from her youth, then it seems to cut to the present- she feels she is aging. Then, another memory, and so on. At the end, "And I'm not a failure, I swear, I wish you could see it from over there" seems like a child wishing the parent would realize their success. With the themes of time, aging, and the poem about her parents at the end, it all gives me the image of a young woman reconciling her "dream like" past and feelings toward her mother.

It's just a happy song. Dreaming about good things. The "just feels good" part always sounds like a commercial to me, though. Like, "It just feels good when you're waking up!" cut to shot of steaming cup of coffee

"running from 3rd base..." there are few things in life that are better than the feeling you get when you're about to win a baseball game especially when you're playing... such provacative imagery and emotions in the lyrics... makes rilo kiley one of my favorite bands
