I think it means what you said, and also possibly that Jason is trying to start a relationship with someone and is sick and tired of being alone - 'I'd blow this whole world to pieces to not be alone.'

I personally find the line "I'd blow the whole world to peices to not be alone." To be the most moving line I've heard in a song.

It's like, he's upset because he's alone, he'd rather destory everything precious to him than be alone, but then later in the song he says that he is the reason he is alone "I am my only devil" he locked himself inside his own "cold cell" by either his words or his actions and now he can't get out and is all alone. Not to mention fed up with the whole thing.

I think the line about the empire and the grass being overgrown is about what he had before he started screwing everything over. The whole song seems to suggest some sort of relationship that he seriously screwed up in, so now he's alone. Then again, he could be singing about his love for cheese... who can say.

i always thought this song was about having to live up to what someone before you had done( "I'll always be stopped by the why can't i, why can't i be you") and not being able to do it ("digging all day long/ can't even seem to make a scratch") but in the end realizing that they weren't the expectations of others, but your own expectations ("I am my only devil").

This song seems to be about the futility of life for those who just don't seem to be good at anything. For those who work and work, but just never seem to get ahead in life, whether it be in professional or personal relationships. It shows an anger of someone who just can't understand why some people seem to have all the luck.
