Black Velvet Band Lyrics
In a neat little town they call Brockton
Apprenticed to trade I was bound
And many an hour's sweet happiness
I spent in that neat little town
Then bad misfortune befell me
That caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and companions
To follow the black velvet band
Well, I was out strolling one evening
Not intending to stay very long
When I met with a pretty young damsel
Who was selling her trade in the bar.
When I watched, she took from a customer
And slipped it right into my hand
Then the Watch came and put me in prison
Bad luck to the black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Before judge and jury next morning
Both of us did appear
A gentleman claimed his jury
And the case against us was clear
Now seven long years transportation
Right down to Van Dieman's land
Far away from my friends and companions
To follow the black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
So come all you jolly young fellows
I'd have you take warning by me
Whenever you're out on the liquor
Beware of the pretty colleen
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

fuck yeah!
whoever submitted these lyrics should either go to the DKM site, buy the Blackout CD and read the insert, or actually listen to the fucking song once. These lyrics are like a wierd distortion of the original and not the DKM version in the slightest. Just because the band is from Boston doesn't mean that this song is about Boston. As a shining example of the numerous mistakes and fuck ups in these lyrics the very first line of the song in the insert and on the website is "in a neat little town they call Quincey" which is where DKM's mailing address was on Blackout and when they actually sing the song they say "in a neat little town they call Brockton" which is from the original Black Velvet Band lyrics. dont argue with me on this one, I'm Irish
Erm... I've heard a series of versions of this song, and all of them say "in a neat little town they call Belfast", except the DKM version, of course. That one says Brockton, cos they're from Massachusetts. I'm tempted to say, "don't argue with me on this one, I'm from Belfast" ;) As for the rest of the lyrics, I suspect they're ripped from a trad Irish lyrics site with the city name changed at the beginning.
That's something cause both of the other two versions I've heard (The Bucaneers [awesome band from Saskatchewan :)] and The Irish Rovers) say Brockton.
You must be crazy. In the Irish Rovers version they CLEARLY say Belfast...

They're both American bands, aren't they? Maybe they sing a different version over there to appeal to a different audience. Any time we have a session we always sing Belfast. So do the likes of the Dubliners.
before DKM i always heard it say Belfast. it surprises me that u have only heard 2 other versions of the song

They didn't write it, its a traditional irish song.
