You've Got Her In Your Pocket Lyrics
You've got her in your pocket
And there's no way out now
Put it in the safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
Nobody ever told you that it was the wrong way
To trick a woman, make her feel she did it her way
And you'll be there if she ever feels blue
And you'll be there when she finds someone new, what to do?
Well, you know
You keep her in your pocket
Where there's no way out now
Put it in a safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
The smile on your face made her think she had the right one
Then she thought she was sure by the way you two could have fun
But now she might leave like she's threatened before
Grab hold of her fast before her feet leave the floor
And she's out the door
'Cause you want
To keep her in your pocket
Where there's no way out now
Put it in a safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
And in your own mind, you know you're lucky just to know her
And in the beginning, all you wanted was to show her
But now you're scared, you think she's running away
You search in your hand for something clever to say:
Don't go away
'Cause I want
To keep you in my pocket
Where there's no way out
Put it in a safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
Home sweet home
And there's no way out now
Put it in the safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
To trick a woman, make her feel she did it her way
And you'll be there if she ever feels blue
And you'll be there when she finds someone new, what to do?
You keep her in your pocket
Where there's no way out now
Put it in a safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
Then she thought she was sure by the way you two could have fun
But now she might leave like she's threatened before
Grab hold of her fast before her feet leave the floor
And she's out the door
To keep her in your pocket
Where there's no way out now
Put it in a safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
And in the beginning, all you wanted was to show her
But now you're scared, you think she's running away
You search in your hand for something clever to say:
Don't go away
To keep you in my pocket
Where there's no way out
Put it in a safe and lock it
'Cause it's home sweet home
Home sweet home

It sounds like a relationship where the guy feels he is not good enough for the girl, and therefore, he has to keep her under control, otherwise she will realize she can do better and leave (or at least in his perspective it is such).
It's a song about obsessive love. Sad,painful, and desperate. Kinda going through something like that myself right now. This beautiful song explains it so eloquently...each time I listen to it I can't help but weep...just a little...
O i love this song! Definitely one of their absolute best. There are two parts that just kill me everytime i listen to it.
'And you'll be there if she ever feels blue And you'll be there when she finds someone new' and 'You search in your hand for something clever to say Don't go away'
sniffle
Jack said in an inteview once that he's never written a song about Meg. I don't believe him.
I beg to differ. This is far from a "sweet" or "beautiful song." It's about not being committed to a relationship; rather, tricking and deceiving a woman (I.E. "To trick a woman, make her feel she did it her way"; "The smile on your face made her think she had the right one. Then she thought she was sure by the way you two could have fun"; "But now you're scared, you think she's running away. You search in your hand for something clever to say"). He wants her to think he'll be with her, but he's content to use her...to keep her close by telling her what she wants to hear when he has no plans to commit. Having her close (just not too close) makes him feel secure so he says whatever he thinks will keep her in the dark (so she'll remain). Good band and a most interesting track, but hardly beautiful. It's painful to hear, but it's honest.
I read this as an obsessive relationship. Perhaps even a murder ballad. The line(s) that convince me this is an unhealthy relationship: Nobody ever told you that it was the wrong way To trick a woman Where there's no way out now Put it in the safe and lock it
especially this line, "But now you're scared You think she's running away You search in your hand for something clever to say"
Why "hand" and not "head" or "heart" ? Because it is the gun in his hand that means "there's no way out now"
"...and you'll be there when she finds someone new what to do Well you know You keep her ... Put it in the safe and lock it" It is a pretty messed up idea to "lock up" a person (even metaphorically ) to keep them from leaving you.
Controlling behavior is a basic red flag for domestic violence.
This song reminds me of The Lights of LA County by Lyle Lovett "When you're driving through the hours with an old friend at your side". When your "friend" is a "beauty of a coal black .45"
Jack White's search "in your hand for something clever to say" "don't go away" to me is haunting.
This is a beautiful, haunting, amazing song. I was completely mesmerized watching him perform it on Jimmy Fallon..
wow im the first on the great song due to the fact it just jack that it awsome! i dont know what it mean exactly but who does? i see it as you have a good friend that you care for greatly and you watch them go though life... i know how this feel so this song works great for me.
The meaning is very simply expressed in the lyrics, unless there's something I missed. It's obviously about how he loves her so much that he is so afraid of losing her...I'm sure that at one point or another we've all felt this.
Yea i agree completely doom. this is SO sweet...
TheHook has it...I agree
