Jenny Lyrics

you roared into the driveway of our
southwestern ranchstyle house
on a new Kawasaki
all yellow and black
fresh out of the showroom
our house faced west
so the big orange sun
positioned at your back
lit up your magnificent silhouhette
how much better, how much better could my life get?
nine hundred cubic centimeters of raw whining power
no outstanding warrants for my arrests
whoa, the pirate's life for me
I hopped on the back of the bike
wrapped my arms around you
I sank my face
into your hair
and then I inhaled
as deeply as I possibly could
you were sweet and delicious
as the warm desert air
and you pointed your headlamp toward the horizon
we were the one thing in the galaxy god didn't have his eyes on
nine hundred cc's of raw whining power
no outstanding warrants for my arrest
goddamn, the pirate's life for me

"we were the one thing in the galaxy god didn't have his eyes on"

I have never heard a live bootleg of this song without this lyric being changed to "we were the two things in the galaxy..." does that in any sort of way mean that john has a different take on the song. I know sometimes he does change the lyrics when performing them, but that just seems like a powerful move.

I think Ive heard the same boot Mr Glass. If it is, it sounded like he'd had a few drinks by the time he got to that one, maybe he just got it wrong? In the same set he did a version of Source Decay that was slightly different (and far, far superior to the AHWT version too).

Actually, john darnielle doesn't really drink that much. the songs are more storytelling than his own life. I saw him this last July in brooklyn, one of the only concerts he has played alone (like back when this album was recorded!) in the past 4 years. He was sober, as well as incredibly articulate and intelligent.

Well, I've heard bootlegs where I really felt he was drunk. A bunch of them really. He talks about it as he drinks. And my friend went to see him and said that he drank all throughout the show. He told me he does it alot.

correction:

where it says "on a new [motorcycle]"

he's saying "on a new Kawasaki"

which is a brand of motorcycle.

OK, so the motorcycle is the same one from Fall of the Star High School Running Back", right? 'Cause the cover says it's about, among other things, one motorcycle. But how are these songs related? It couldn't be William in the song, because how many seventeen-year-olds share a house with a romantic partner? And the bike is described as being brand new in this song, so it's sort of baffling. This is the only part of the AHWT mythos that I can't really get my head around, so if anyone can shed some light...

Wow, I've listened to this album countless times and never caught that. This song does pretty much state they are the first owners of the bike, so it can be assumed that the events song to song--when switching in between characters--aren't happening in the order presented. Plus, a highschooler selling some drugs probably couldn't afford a new bike so he buys an old one that the couple got rid of in the divorce?
