"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

It's a disease and they're all green
It emanates from their being
A satiation with occupation
And like weeds with big leaves
Stealing light from what's beneath
Where they have more
Still they take more
I know, then I don't
There's a stow-away with my throat
It's deceiving, I don't believe him
We can scream out our doors
Behind the wall, a fat man snores
In his dreams, he's choking ti leaves
Well I guess there's nothing wrong with what you say
But don't sell me, "there can't be better ways"
Tell the captain, "the boat's not safe, and we're drowning"
Turns out he's the one making waves, waves, waves...
I said there's nothing wrong with what you say
Believe me, I'm just asking you to sway
No white or black, just grey
Can you feel this world with your heart and not your brain?
Brain...

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
I think the song is pretty straight-forward.
