Funny story: I had read that YYZ is the name of the Toronto Pearson airport and that the song was supposed to convey the hustle and bustle of an airport, but my husband did not know this and on a road trip to Toronto he excitedly pointed on the roadmap that he was looking at said "look, the airport is named YYZ, they must have named it after the Rush song!"

I laughed so hard!!!!

Um this is clearly just a show off song. When you have one of the greatest drummers, guitarists, and bassists in the same band, you might show off once in a while.

Yes, inspired because of the number of times that Rush went through YYZ (Toronto Pearson International) airport.

As Neil Peart, his highness, the greatest fucking drum soloist in the fucking world (he's great with the band too but so are alot of drummers. Not many drummers can keep a solo going for 40 minutes and keep the audience INTRESTED. I think him and John Bohnam are the best at that and he's better. Plus, John's dead and Neil's alive.) himself said, the intro 5/4 rhythm, is morse code for YYZ which is the travel code for Toronto, the hometown of the band, where they grew up (althought Geddy Lee is the only one who was born in Toronto) and I am god damn proud to live in this great city (I live in toronto, around where Geddy lived. In fact, I know where he went to school he went to Newtonbrooke Secondary School which isn't too far from me. To finish off, a quote from Neil Peart:

It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags!

Neil Peart, greatest drummer, most insightful lyricist, quite the accentric writer, and a very mysterious man..To me because I don't know him...bow down.

The intro is 10/8, not 5/4.

I always thought it stood for something.

You and Your Zucchini Yes, a Yiddish Zebra Yowzers, You're Zany

etc., etc.

This tune sounds awesome live.

I love the Rio version where you can hear the crowd singing along, as someone already mentioned. Fucking brilliant.
