Red Apples (Smog cover) Lyrics

I went down to the river
To meet the widow
She gave me an apple
And it was red

I slept in her black arms
For a century
She wanted nothing in return
I gave her nothing in return

The ghost of her husband
Beautiful as a horse
Pulled up an apple cart
Full of millions of red apples for us
Full of millions of red apples for us

I went down to the river
To meet the widow
She gave me an apple
And it was red

I slept in her black arms
For a century
She wanted nothing in return
I gave her nothing in return

I went down to the river
To meet the widow

So here's my two bits on this beautiful song.

I think the red apple is supposed to be like temptation. She is going to meet this widowed woman at the river to comfort her, and the widow gives her and apple as a symbol of temptation. So they're having a relationship. I don't know what the black arms mean. I think she is sleeping in her arms while they are together, but maybe the singer doesn't feel like she loves this person. Maybe the widow just needed comfort, needed someone to love. And the singer was there to provide but didn't reciprocate. I don't know what the simile of the husband as a horse means, other than to lead into the cart imagery. I think the millions of red apples is a symbol of the husband either moving on and being okay with the widow's new relationship, or is mocking the singer who is now in a relationship she has no feelings for.

I know this is a cover song, and I believe the original singer was a male. I think the fact that Chan is female adds another layer of "sin" to this song, which is ultimately what I think it's about. A woman losing her husband, loving another woman after his death, and being haunted by her husband for it.

The husband in this song was also sexually active with the singer. The singer decides to go down to the river to pay her respects and sees the widow. The widow knows the relationship that her husband had with the women but isn't upset because she is already to upset about his death. The singer is held in the widows arms because they are both feeling the same emotion for the same man so they can empathize with one another. This is proven with the fact that the singer refers to the man as a beautiful horse who carries -red apples- which mean temptation.
