So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Train set and match spied under the blind
Shiny and contoured the railway winds
And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed
The hiss of the train at the railway head
Always the summers are slipping away
A 60 ton angel falls to the earth
A pile of old metal, a radiant blur
Scars in the country, the summer and her
Always the summers are slipping away
Find me a way for making it stay
When I hear the engine pass I'm kissing you wide
The hissing subsides
I'm in luck
When the evening reaches here you're tying me up
I'm dying of love
It's OK
Dadaidadadada
Daddadadadadadadada
Daidadadaidadadai
Dadaidadadada
Dudududu
Daidadadaidadadai
When I hear the engine pass I'm kissing you wide
The hissing subsides
I'm in luck
When the evening reaches here you're tying me up
I'm dying of love
It's OK
Always the summers are slipping away
Find me a way for making it stay
Always the summers are slipping away
Always the summers are slipping away
Shiny and contoured the railway winds
And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed
The hiss of the train at the railway head

I am only geussing, but I would bet that this song is about visiting family who live near a railroad for the summer.
"Train set and match spied under the blind Shiny and contoured the railway winds And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed The hiss of the train at the railway head"
Well this definatly describes being in his cousins room. And I feel that "Train set and match spied under the blind"
means maybe the light of the train passing through the blinds on a window.
"Shiny and contoured the railway winds"
Is definatly describing what can be seen of the railroad out the window.
"And I've heard the sound from my cousin's bed The hiss of the train at the railway head"
This part says alot to me it tells me that hes sleeping in his cousins room, and he hears a train pass by, so this leaves me to believe he is staying with family probably borrowing his cousins room.
"Always the summers are slipping away Find me a way for making it stay"
This backs up my theory that he is on vacation (summer vacation) visiting fammily and that he is happy, enjoying himself, and he is dreading the fact its coming to an end. and seeing as he said "always the summerS" lead me to believe he does this every summer.
"A 60 ton angel falls to the earth A pile of old metal, a radiant blur Scars in the country, the summer and her "
This sounds as its saying nothing other than describing the train.
"When I hear the engine pass I'm kissing you wide The hissing subsides I'm in luck"
I am not clear on what this or
"When the evening reaches here You're tying me up I'm dying of love It's OK"
this means. My theorys are maybe he has a girlfriend with him, or its a metaphor talking about how he is falling in love with the area he is visiting.
Anyways that my geuss at the meaning.
a very good interpretation, but I really think the part with the 60 ton angel means much more...<br /> <br /> "A 60 ton angel falls to the earth<br /> A pile of old metal, a radiant blur<br /> Scars in the country, the summer and her "<br /> <br /> I think this song might be about a small boy, witnessing a train derail of a bridge, hill or simmilar, from his cousins room while on vacation. It is told more as if it's a memory though.<br /> <br /> "When I hear the engine pass<br /> I'm kissing you wide<br /> The hissing subsides<br /> I'm in luck"<br /> <br /> I don't quite get this either, but I think it might be another memory from the train derailing, the "I'm in luck" part might refer to him not being on the train, and therefore not dying...<br /> <br /> "allways the summers, are slipping away" might be even deeper with several meanings... it can also refer to life and death, with the summers representing life, and might be a part of how this boy copes with witnessing such a horrific accident with perhaps a large loss of lifes...<br /> <br /> The lyrics in this text are very hard to interpret, and may be seen in very many ways, and only the author may tell us what is right or wrong, It might also have several meanings, both the train derailing, a love story etc....
